R40 and R50 have PATA HDDs
T61p 6460-67G; 15,4 WSXGA+ W7P x64, no hairdryer.
T43p 2668-G2G, 14,1 SXGA+, XP Pro, internal hairdryer
T23 2647-9LG, 14,1 SXGA+, XP Pro, no hairdryer

As stated, no you can't, but more importantly why do you want to attempt this?

There's no SATA HD on the market that can't be had in PATA (IDE) form.

Actually, I believe that there is a way to install a SATA drive as a secondary drive through an HD caddy, but I cannot find the thread that I read on it, right now.

Although, I am sure that this isn't what you are looking for since it would be a secondary drive and not a primary drive.
