Z61P and Windows Vista *Troubles?*

#1 Post by RS_003 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 7:34 am

Hello,

For a client I am going to order an Z61P (T7200, 2Gb, ATI FireGL V5200 256Mb, 100B 7200rpm)

I have to ask, I know some Z61P's are sold with Vista, however, the unit I need to install for a client has XP Prof per factory.

Is it possible to get Vista fully running?
The client needs the PCMCIA Slot for his WWAN card, so this is an absolute requirement! However, when I look at the following page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 64278.html I don't see any drivers listed for the pcmciaslot of the Z61P  :?:

So... I Think I have an problem...

The model I am ordering is the UA1JRNU
9452-JRG

Everywhere listed (even at IBM) as an 15.4" WUXGA (Suplier, and others shops + IBM germany)

However, when you do an partslookup Very lonnnnnnngggg url ;)

You see:
Original description: T7200(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5200, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, IEEE 1394, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, that can't be right? Since every shop on the world lists this thing as an WUXGA (1920x1200) (But none of them has the laptop at stock)

IBM link for an 9452-JRG unit

However, when I search for 9452-jrg and UA1JRNU at the same time I get zerro results (however, as noted: when you search for one of the listed models, you get 1920x1200 back as an result)

I probably wouldn't worry to much about it. When I ordered my Z61p you could only get a WUXGA screen. Plus the TABook does not list a WSXGA screen on any system.

As far as Vista goes, I don't think you need a driver to get the cardbus to work, but even if you do, you should be able to use the one for the other zseries as they all use the same cardbus controller.

Personally I would stick with Windows XP (and I am) for the time being as there are software compatibility issues with some of the development utilities I use. I would say the larger issue, is if there is a WWAN Vista driver for your card.

Finally, the windows vista upgrade advisor doesn't list any issues with any of my hardware on my z61p.

Thank you so much, I also was very confused, since I use IBM hardware as long as I use notebooks (ThinkPad FTW! ;) ) and had several P's but the P models always had the highest available resolution for thier screen size. (the R50P with the QUXGA screen aside)

So, It is just an mistake at the IBM website I guess (Wouldn’t be the first time, I once had an T30 which IBM said had an 1.8 Ghz cpu, but came with an 2.4 Ghz)

Concerning Vista: The customer is king ;)

I will report back when I take delivery of this laptop, so I can inform you all about running Vista on this kind of machine (should be a lot of fun ;))
