ThinkPad 1836

#1 Post by BruceRY » Fri Apr 06, 2007 9:50 pm

I have the above to fix for a friend. It will not power up when turned on. Nor will it when the power supply is attached. The power supply is good and is putting out voltage (checked with a volt meter) so i'll assume it's the laptop it self. NOTE: Where the power supply plugs into the laptop, it seems real loose connection there. I wonder if something inside the case is broke and a solder joint came loose? I have worked on notebooks and laptops before. I replaced a screen, keyboard and complete guts before. But this one I'm not sure which screws to remove to get to the power jack area. Can someone show me a link detailing the steps to follow?

From the drawing on page 121 of the HMM, the DC-connector is a plastic 'blob', which runs some wires to a connector on the mobo.
Could be that the clamps that hold the 'blob' are broken, but that should not interfere with letting power through, unless the connector became 'unstuck'.
There are no fuses in the DC-unit nor in the cable.
They will be on the mobo itself. They look like small rectangles with a green 'X' over them, and a number.

Soon as I can get the labtop back, I'll look for the fuse and test the DC-IN cable with a volt meter ohm.........
