Quality concerns seem overblown
Quality concerns seem overblown
After all the various complaining on the forums, I was a bit nervous about keyboards, displays & quality. Maybe its because I'm coming from a T30, but this T60p rocks! I also have a T42 14" XGA at work, so its not like the T30 lowered my expectations too much.
I think the display is fantastic, keyboard is great, and general quality is fine. The chassis seems very stiff and there are no palm rest creaks. Yes the fan does run constantly, but it is a very low hum. I can't believe people find that noise to be obtrusive.
Anyway, I'll probably catch all kinds of hell from the naysayers, but I believe the ThinkPad philosophy is alive and well.
(edit for grammar)

A lot of people had the same results you have, very happy with their new machine, I was too, and still am.
And very glad I got a high end graphics to run Vista because I like that too.
Every once in a while you will see a post or two from someone who is satisfied and happy, it's so nice to read them.

I think I agree with just about everything in the OP. My T60p is built VERY well. Very high construction quality, and much less flex than my T42. I'm really coming to love the widescreen aspect ratio as well. I'll probably have to pick up a six-cell battery at some point to shave off another couple of ounces, but other than that, I love this computer.
I do have two minor complaints that I hesitate to bring up in this thread, but neither are a big deal and I can essentially dismiss them so why not? First, I do wish the fan would shut off sometimes. But yeah, it's really not a problem. Second, I do see the reasoning behind some of complaints about the screen. But beyond a certain point, just about any screen is good enough for me, and the Thinkpad is well beyond that point. If a bright, glossy screen were important to me, there are laptops that offer such screens. I bought a Thinkpad for an entirely different set of reasons, and I've been entirely pleased with it thus far.

I am happy too, there are just 3 things which pop into my eyes sometimes.
1. The left metallic mount of the display is a little skew. Its not parallel to the chassis. The right one is perfect shaped.
2. The plastic above the keyboard is not straight, it has a little belly in the middle.
3. The plastic above the DVD rom is loose, so if you tip with the finger on it it makes "click" noise and this give it a small "cheap plastic touch"
Does anyone of you have the same issues and I am just a little over-sensible? I switched from a X31 which was rock solid in every aspect.

T60p, 2613-HQU, 2,33GHz Merom, 2GB, 160GB, FireGL5250
Hmm, perhaps you could try to reassembly yourself? It is very easy to take the palmrest, keyboard and top cover off. Check out whether the parts are damaged. I do not have your problems.ms wrote:I am happy too, there are just 3 things which pop into my eyes sometimes.

That's a good idea. But in case things stay the same then just keep in mind about the basic properties of flexibility and elasticity in plastic and all those clicking sound being a sign of impurity in the material.SpaRood wrote:Hmm, perhaps you could try to reassembly yourself? Mine has been flawless, both physically and mentally. T60p / 2Gb RAM / 7200 rpm drive / 15" flex view / ATI 5250 graphics / 2GHz T7200 DuoCore. Got it last December, use it hard, travel all week. Have WinXP Pro, AutoCAD, MathCAD, Quicken, OpenOffice, Microsoft Office, Thunderbird, Firefox (sometimes Opera), Expensable, Miranda IM, MS Project, Primaveral, Adobe Pro, etc. Use it wireless and wired. Access connections works great. Fingerprint reader works great. No noise or heat to speak of. Screen is superb. Keyboard is superb. DVD burner works flawlessly. Minor glitch with USB drivers solved. Wireless mouse works great. Case is solid. Screen has one dead pixel that I never see (found it once, never notice it now). Maintain with CCleaner, PerfectDisk, RegistryFirstAid. took all the Norton stuff off, use Comodo firewall and AVG virus. Am very careful where I go and what I do. Email is filtered agressively at the ISP and within Thunderbird. Heavy use of online games (when son gets his hands on it) and ITunes. Shortkeys,TtimeZone, Univerter and TClock rouud out the utilities. Am just trying Copernic - not sure yet if it will stay. Use RAdmin to tap into home PC and BeyondCompare to backup to external drives.
Basically I could not ask for more from a laptop.
