9442-UN6 Z61t support of 1920x1200 resolution

Hi All,
I have a Z61t and can't get it to drive my Sony P234 at full resolution (1920x1200). I've tried updated Intel drivers for the onboard 945GM chip set and updated Sony drivers. The closest I can get is 1600x1200. Any Ideas? I was not expecting this to be a problem. Everything else is working fine. XP Pro SP2 is the OS..

Are you using DVI or VGA? VGA has a higher chance of suporting 1920x1200. Also, try setting the color depth to 16-bit instead of 32-bit.

I'm using VGA at the moment... Also forgot to mention there's 2 gig of memory. I'll give 16 bit a try, but if that's the color depth I have to run at, this machine will be looking for a new home..

This doesn't make sense because my X60s (with only 768MB RAM) also had the 945GM chipset and it could drive my Dell monitor's 1920x1200 via VGA. Lenovo has video driver version 6.14.10.4693, released on 2006/11/10 . Have you tried that one? Also, how are you adjusting the resolution? I connected my X60s to the Dell monitor by setting it up as "monitor 2" in WinXP's "Display Properties", and chose the "Extend Desktop" option.

This may be a stupid question, but do you know if other systems will drive the monitor at WUXGA through the VGA port. The reason I ask is because at least for my Sony 1080p HDTV, the VGA input on it is limited to a much lower resolution then what my laptop can generate. I have to use a different connector to get high resolutions.

So, if I were you I would see if a VGA->DVI cable will solve your problem. Or, are you saying the driver for your card doesn't have the option of going to 1900x1200?

I don't get 1920 x1200 as an option in the screen settings for monitor 2 and extended Desktop.. Unfortunatley, I don't have a docking station to try the native DVI connection. Will try a VGA to DVI adapter. This is a bit of a suprise, since my 3 year old T42 will do 1920x1200 through the VGA port as well as through the DVI prot on a docking station...

I'll have a look at that other driver....

Just go ahead choose "1600x1200" anyway and click "OK" to exit Display Properties. Then open Display Properties and now it might show you the "1920x1200" option. Choose that and click "OK".

Tried that as well... I put on the latest Intel driver 6.14.10.4785 from 2/26/07. Still no 1920x1200 resolution option. I get 1600x1200, 1680x1050 and 2048x1536. My T60 acts like you describe. Choose 1600x1200, click apply, then 1920x1200 will show up.

Seems like there's a line in a configuration fle missing someplace...

Still need to try the DVI connection with a VGA to DVI converter.

Update... Finally got it working. Needed another BIOS update. This one was under the Optional updates on the Lenovo updater. Bios 1.08 3/14/07..

I should clarify, I got it working on VGA only, which does not look very good on my external flat panel. After several hours of poking around on the Lenovo and Intel sites, it appears that Z61t 9442-UN6 with the Intel graphics set will NOT do DVI in any way, shape or form. Not even hooked up to the Advanced dock with a DVI graphics card. Found this on the Intel site:

The note section contains the real kicker...
Note: The GMCH graphics engine is incapable of operating in parallel with an external PCI Express* graphics device. The GMCH graphics engine can, however, work in conjunction with a PCI graphics adapter.

Ok, great, can use a PCI adapter, but the advanced doc uses PCIe so the docking station option is out.... Funny thing is that at the bottom of the Intel page, it clearly states that DVI is supported.

they are kind enough to tell buyers that the Intel based machines will not support DVI. The link to details for the Z61t makes no mention of that...

I've tried all the bios combinations for setting the video boot and primary devices. When in the docking station with the video card (GeForce 6700GS), the machine will not even post.

Just a heads up for everyone...

That's very surprising. For such a recently introduced laptop (May 2006), one would think that even the oldest BIOS would support 1920x1200.

That was the last thing I was expecting to have an issue with. DVI has worked through the docking station on the other Thinkpads I've used. I checked the Intel site on the 945 GM chipset and didn't see anything about DVI not working on the Lenovo page for the 9442. Figured I was good to go...

Other than that, I really like the machine. Unfortunately, no DVI renders the machine useless for my needs.
