What version of Vista?

And yes, 1GB of RAM will help a lot. So would a faster hard drive and better CPU. You can't do much about the weak graphics card you have.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.
Old:
E6520, Precision M4400, D630, Latitude E6520
ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301

To give you an idea, I am running Vista Ultimate retail on my much older custom built desktop with P4 1.8 GHZ, 512MB memory, 80GB HDD, MSI board with intel's Integrated graphics card. It runs "Flawlessly" and I have not experienced any system degrading issues so far.

I say go for it and if you feel like adding extra memory, you can do that later too.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.
