About to purchase a T60...or was. Is Flexview available?

#1 Post by Bing0 » Sun Apr 08, 2007 6:08 pm

First of all I would like to introduce myself to everyone and say hello from Augusta, Georgia.

I am about to purchase a Lenovo Thinkpad (tomorrow probably).

What is the deal on the displays? Will I be able to get a decent display from Lenovo at all. I have had 4 Thinkpads and until I saw the thread where they were discontinuing the beautiful displays,
I was going to get one.

It would be very difficult for me to go from an A31P to anything with a display comparable to a Dell or HP.

I will be purchasing a loaded T60P. Is Flexview available?
Has the time run out on availability when purchasing direct from Lenovo?

...Very Dissappointed,

I just took a quick look at lenovo.com and didn't see any Thinkpads with Flexview. Even if they still had some, you wouldn't want to buy them because they would be 15" SXGA+ displays, worse than your A31p's 15" UXGA. I also checked Euclidcomputers.com and Costcentral.com and both of them have run out of UXGA Thinkpads. The only options now are eBay or maxing out your A31p (e.g. 2GB RAM, 7200rpm HDD, 2.6GHz P-4M) if you haven't already done so.

I wish you had let me know just a month or two ago, when my alma mater still had several T60's with UXGA Flexview at deeply discounted prices (like 40% off). I could've bought one for you.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

WSXGA is all that is available...yes

WSXGA is all that is available...yes.

I don't necessarily mind that. I just do not want the display to be the inferior one described in some of the other threads where it is reported that at the current time, Lenovo is phasing out the Flexview type display for cheaper less appealing monitors.

There is a big difference between phasing out and not being able to procure a vendor. People seem to keep blaming Lenovo for something they have no control over. The Thinkpad is a wonderful product. In areas where there is big differences in type/quality of components, they still exceed nearly everyone else. It just happens that there isn't that much choice when it comes to laptop displays among the industry anymore. Read this:

Firstly I am stressing out because one of the things that I absolutely love about every ThinkPad I have ever owned is the display quality.

The reason why I am stressing is that I am going to buy one tomorrow morning. I will likely have to buy from Lenovo as I am a reseller and get a sizeable discount on my own personal machine.
Though I am a reseller I have not bought a lot from them and thus the reason why I do not know the answer to this.

While I am going to speak to my sales rep about this, I would like to know if Flexview is the same as SXGA + and WSXGA +.

For the record, I disagree with your saying that this is not Lenovo's fault. Agreed the markets greatly dictate what is available for the manufacturers to install in their machines but...

I am fully persuaded that if the ThinkPad were still a machine controlled by IBM, we would not be seeing this development.
Quality costs more and there are some of us who would be willing to pay for it.

I always have a hard time with such statements, which basically claim that IBM would care about quality and protect the Thinkpad brand, unlike Lenovo. Apparently, IBM didn't even care enough to keep the Thinkpad brand, so how can you claim that they'd handle it any better than Lenovo?

Lenovo are in fact still selling T60’s with both 14.1” SXGA+ displays and 15” SXGA+ FlexView/IPS displays, and even (at least) a single T60p with a 15" 1600x1200 UXGA FlexView/IPS display... more info here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=40693

Kind regards,

Lenovo Canada still has several T60 configurations with the 15" FlexView (SXGA+, 1400x1050). I don't see any T60p's though, if you really want the FireGL option. I just ordered my FlexView T60 three weeks ago.

if you can locate a 15" T60P with SXGA+ you can be sure that you still can upgrade to a BOE Hydis or Chi Mei 15" IPS UXGA panel. from Lenovo they are very expensive but have Hydis UXGA in stock. you can find a "grade A" (5 or less single pixel defects -- considered "very good" refurb quality) UXGA panel by either of the mentioned manufacturers above through an ebay seller for less than 1/3 the price than Lenovo charges for the part.

i have one on order now and am waiting for delivery.... that's grade A BOE Hydis UXGA IPS 15" for ~$250 + 65 for install to upgrade from SXGA+. will drop a line here after to swap to offer my experience.

Install it yourself.

You can even upgrade a 15" XGA system to UXGA. and there are a BUNCH of NEW UXGA panels on ebay for CHEAP!

if you're upgrading an XGA system, just make sure you pick up the appropriate inverter (also on ebay!)
