I currently have ThinkPad R51 (15" SXGA+ FlexView, 1GB RAM, P-M 1.6GHz). I was thinking about buying a T60 successor next year (the price of T60 is now similar to the R51 2.5 years ago). Decent display quality is the essential feature for me. I wouldn't mind smaller T 14" SXGA+ but their displays are currently unacceptable. I also prefer standard 4:3 form factor. I use virtual machines all the time so my concern is the Intel's hardware virtualization support which should improve in Santa Rosa (and thus T61 and so on) and fast HDDs with perpendicular recording.
After reading latest news about situation regarding displays I'm just thinking whether to buy one of last T60 boxes or wait and hope Lenovo will bring acceptable screens again next year. I also don't want to exchange notebooks every year.
To buy T60 FlexView quickly or wait and hope to next year?
I'm in the same boat as you. My current laptop is the 15" SXGA+ T42, and the disappearance of IPS screens is disturbing to me.
I opted not to buy a new notebook now. Besides, I kinda think that I want a smaller one for my next buy, so I'm leaning towards getting the X60 Tablet (or its successor). I still have hope that IPS screens will stay a while longer in the Tablet sector.
My advice would be as follows: if you can somehow get one of the Core 2 Duo T60 models, as fast and as maxed out as you can (for example the 2007-7KU or equivalent), go for it. This way you'll get a newer, more powerful and 64-bit ready CPU, and won't have to upgrade for a while, even if the good screens will come back.

I'm also tempted getting something smaller (and lighter). I choosed R51 over T42 because T was much more expensive when I bought it. I'm not keen on Tablet PCs but something between X60s and V100 (similar to HP nc2400) with internal DVD would be nice. I'd lost the screen resolution but recently I use desktop PC with 20" LCD monitor anyway.
Intel Core 2 Duo with current chipset still does not seem to be that innovative to rush to buy it.
Ok, let's wait what Lenovo is cooking ...
I still can't believe there won't be decent notebook displays on the earth.
