How much spam email do you get everyday?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:56 am

I get "201 - 400" per day. I wish there were a way to persecute the [censored] responsible for these junk emails.

My personal e-mail address is over 10 years old. While I don't use it in public any more, it's really too late as it's been on every spammer's list for years. I whitelist it through Earthlink, so very few of the 500+ spams/day actually get through to me. Do I lose a few real e-mails here and there? Probably. Does it matter? Not in comparison.

I get around 50-60 spam emails on my Gmail account every day. Thank god, they all end up in the spam folder. The folder automatically deletes any messages >30 days old, and it usually has between 1000-1400 emails in it.

I use a small vendor in the Toronto area to house my email. They have greylisting in effect since very late last year, and have Spamassassin running for the last 3 or 4 years, now at V3.1.7. The combination is brutal on spam. I have recorded 5 received in my inbox since December 18, 2006.

Before that, in 2004, I was getting 13 per day. Then, before late 2006 (prior to greylisting), I was up to 50 per day (but only receiving about 1 per day in my inbox). Now I am down to one every 30 days or so. I still report it :)

I don't usually get spam in my primary account. In my Yahoo! account I started getting more and more recently, it's now >10 per day. On my institute account I get several dozens per day.

It is a HUGE problem. I put a Spam Control system in at a client and more than 1 out of each 2 emails is spam.

The language I use to describe spammers would be unwelcome in this forum and from an admin, so I shall refrain. ... JDH

I put myself down for 201-400 but that is spread out between three e-mail accounts I routinely use (2 personal, 1 work). The worst of it is on my Yahoo account, which is the one I'm registered with here. On average I'd say it's about 140-160 per day but it has only reached that level fairly recently (last couple of months). 98% of them automatically end up on the Trash folder, which I usually scan the subject lines before deleting. The personal AOL account receives only about 5-10 a day while the work e-mail gets about 50. I think it's mainly due to the early days of USENET when I posted my address(es) in my signature and no doubt some of it has been the result of posting my address here.

The ones that get through the spam filters on each e-mail service and end up in my Inbox get only a brief look at the subject line before sending it to the trash. Anything with "Hey" or "Hi" or no subject at all, get the immediate consignment to the virtual round file. Same for anything showing up in a language other than English.

edit: 12 hours after clearing my Yahoo Trash folder, there were 165 new messages in there  .

My Gmail account gets 50-60 a day.
My personal account gets between 20-30, of which 98% automatically goes into the Junk-folder. The 2-3 that slip through into my Inbox, get marked 'Junk' and are never heard of again.
I use Mozilla Thunderbird for my personal email, and find it's Junk-filter excellent.
Tbird has yet to put a real email automatically in the Junk, amazing after 2 years!

I get once per month on my personal and 10-15 daily on my business account.

Somewhere between 30-75 per day, mostly through the email links on my two websites.
Not counting email spam from Hotmail and Yahoo.

A few hundred through my Duke email, a few hundred more through Gmail. Duke is redirected to Gmail which I use for everything.

It's pretty bad. Thankfully, Gmail puts all its personal spam into a folder, and the Duke client has its own solution on its own servers, so I rarely actually run into a spam mail.

I answered zero because I get much less than 1 per day - something always manages to sneak through. I guess, however, my email ISP is tightening down the grey listing rules. I have now gone 72 days with not one spam. That is two continguous months (June and July) with not one spam. That has not happened since before 2001 when I started tracking the problem. Joy :D

Unfortunately, I think I am getting even more than back in April when I started this thread. It's probably around 400 per day now. I think most of these spammers found my email addresses through my web sites, scientific publications, and my institution's online directory.

Sounds about the same for me. I cleared out my Yahoo! spam folder late last night (12 hours ago) and it's now sitting at 192. I especially like the DOZENS of "final attempt" messages from WalMart and Sams Club I've received in the past several months.

BTW, if anyone tries contacting me via my email button, put "Thinkpads" in the subject line. That way it should be caught by my filters and routed to my Inbox, instead of tossed into the spam folder.

More than spam, I hate getting "invites" from spambots on my yahoo messenger. Sadly, this has been increasing for the last 6 months, to the point where I have ditched using messenger and switched to using gaim.

And yeah, I get about 100-200 spam mails everyday in yahoo+gmail+school ids, though gmail does a great job of seperating spam from proper email.

First - never unsubscribe to spam. It just generates more.
Second - it is your ISP who must implement greylisting. It is a process of the ISP looking at the incoming mail and testing the sender for a real address. Most spam does not pass this test. It is then turfed. Obviously my ISP has turned up the screws in greylisting and yet I don't seen anything real being turned away.
Third - My ISP also runs SpamAssassin (which is very much needed) and I tightened it down so much that I have effectively turned OFF my email. If I do not know who you are, I do not receive your email. My whitelist is HUGE.

It is now seven+ months with zero spam. I had been tracking it (700 in 2001, 800 in 2002, 1500 in 2003, 2000 in 2004, 100 in 2005, 140 in 2006 and 10 in 2007). Time to stop tracking and enjoy the fruits of SpamAssassin 3.2 and Grey Listing. ... JDH
