Hard disk drive X40

#1 Post by mappoint » Thu Sep 30, 2004 11:13 am

Will there ever be a larger hard disk drive for the X40 series than 40 GB? Or is the used 1.8 inch format a dying standard?

Thanks

Thomas

Hitachi and others are developing larger drives in 1.8 format.
It's a new tech. certainly not a dying one.

These 1.8 inch drives are available with different connectors. Toshiba already has 60 GB 1.8 inch drive, Hitachi/IBM introduced a new 1.8 inch drive with a "new ZIF connector".

Do you have any informations about larger drives that will fit into the X40?

Thanks

All I have heard is that Hitachi is developing a 60GB drive that will work in the X40

I asked Hitachi this question about two weeks ago via their Web site. They would not give me a timeline. However, they said to "access our Web site every day for an announcement." We'll see ... clearly, Hitachi and Toshiba do offer 1.8-inch 60 GB drives for sale right now. They just don't have the right shape and configuration to install in the x40.

It's just a matter of time, IMHO.

Thanks

What is the 'shape' ?

#8 Post by cybertof » Mon Oct 04, 2004 11:57 am

What is the name of 'good shape' for a drive to be used in X40 ?
Is it the 'new ZIF connector' ?
Is the traverlstar CK60 compatible ?

Specifications of a 'compatible' drive :
- 1.8'' footprint
- zif connector ?
- other ?

Is the X40 the only ultra-portable that uses this kind of shape or are there any other devices ?

Cybertof.

My friend has a TR and he says his uses a 1.8" hard drive as well. I'm not sure about the "zif connector" or "Travelstar CK60 compatible" though.

Is there a place to actually buy these drives by themselves? I'm thinking of buying an X40 but am concerned about buying a laptop where I can't replace the hard drive, since I've had a number of laptop drives fail. It's easy to buy replacement 2.5" drives and they're not too expensive. How much do the 1.8" drives cost? Thanks.

No, that's wrong again. Hitachi does NOT offer a 60GB 1.8" inch drive yet. The C4K60 with the ZIF connector, despite its misleading name, only offers 30GB maximum capacity up to now (model HTC426030G7CE00, because it only has a single platter):

"Travelstar C4K60

Highlights
New ZIF connector for easy integration into consumer electronics devices
30GB maximum capacity
Smallest 1.8" footprint in the lightest package
Low power consumption
High shock tolerance for all-terrain usage
High performance for faster file download"

No. The connector is the same as on the 2.5" drives. Means you can connect an ordinary 2.5" drive to the X40, but of course it will stick out half-way.

I guess you mean the C4K60. No, it isn't.

SFF8111-standard compliant. AFAIK, the HitachiGST TravelStar C4K40 that comes with the X40 is the only one yet.

Yes, to my knowledge these drives haven't been used anywhere else yet.

What is the easiest way to upgrade to a new HD? Can you just image you rcurrent HD and install it in the new one from a CDRom? Can anybody give me the step by step instruction son how to do this?

I am considering buying a X40 1Ghz but would like to upgrade memory (from 256 to 512 and the HD from 20 to 40).
