Odd problem, help please

#1 Post by gt5l » Mon Apr 09, 2007 12:58 pm

Hello everyone, this is my first post here, I just stumbled on this forum last night as I was searching for a solution to a reproducible problem on my T60P ThinkPad. Here is how it goes; I have win vista ultimate installed on my T60 with 2.33 dc and 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive, FireGL 5250 14” LCD. The vista was a clean install, i.e. I formatted the hard drive and installed vista out right. I have Lenovo power management enabled where it is on "balanced power". If the computer is plugged in and it is in screen saver mode for a while then I unplug it the LCD screen shuts off, the computer is on but the screen is black and I can't get it to turn back on (Fn+F7 does not do it). The only way to get the screen to turn back on is to manually shut down the computer (hold power button down) and then restart. This is a PIA and it is reducing my reliability index. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution without having to put the computer in high performance power plan all the time regardless of power status?

Welcome to the forums!

You can try a few things:

1. This issue has been reported atleast once before:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=22158
Someone reported that the problem went away after they disabled powerplay in the ATI settings. You can try that. Others said that Fn-spacebar brings the screen back, you can try these too.

2. It was supposedly a Windows Update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917332/en-us that did the trick for some.
This hotfix is available here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/ind ... opic=10761

3. Try defragmenting your drive. I had the same problem with my T60 (win XP though) and it went away after I defragemented the drive. But again, I updated my system and the updates might have fixed it as well

I'll post if something else pops in my mind.

And hey, you need to put your location in your profile as per forum rules.

Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

Thank you for the quick reply, I appreciate live forums like this one, I will keep an eye on this forum for an opportunity to help others. As for your recommended solutions:
1) other reported cases: The system is really not in standby mode, it is running but the monitor is off
2) videoprt.sys: I believe the MS Kbs apply mostly to WinXp and I am not sure if I can install it in vista, plus the version installed with vista is newer (by date) than the ones described in MS KBs.
3) Defragging: I think won’t help as this problem occurs only when switching power status, thus I believe it is driver related more than anything else.
Thank you again for your comments, please throw any ideas you have my way, I am an open minded person.

Although this is not an ideal solution, you may be able to get it back on by hitting Fn+space on the keyboard, and then after it comes back up with lowered resolution, hit that combination again to get it to go back to hires. Worked for me, but you dont have the same situation. I would say it is still worth a try.

Well, Sort of, I tried to uninstall Migration Assistant and my computer started acting funky, every time I boot it up it tries to configure migration assistant and gets stuck on that screen, and my kaspersky AV would not work for some reason. I tried restore from previous backup but that did not help. Therefore, I formatted and reinstalled windows. This resolved the entering into sleep mode, now my computer goes to sleep, the battery gauge is not flickering anymore, and I have a fresh install.
