R51 1836 NO POWER UP

#1 Post by BruceRY » Mon Apr 09, 2007 9:57 pm

Absolutly nothing when ac hooked up. not even a charging indicator light. AC adaptor checked out with volt meter and seems good. Followed instructions for removing components and restarting but no luck. Could be any number of things? Fried? toast? comes to mind. do not know history as i'm fixing it for a friend :(

one thing that was nice about this model was that it had a seperate piece that plugged into the system board for power. Called a "DC in cable" pt probably costs a few cents. It comes in a misc kit.

I had found information on dissasembly. Keyboard, bezel, modem daughter card were removed and all I found was a loose screw that held the power plug thing in. Tightened that screw up, reassembled the laptop and still nothing. followed directions on removing components and reinstalling one at a time, STILL NO LUCK. Oh , yes the plug your talking about, I removed it and re-seated it also. Mobo or power distribution area likley fried I think

One thing to try if you have not already.

Remove the AC adapter and battery. Hold down power button for 15 seconds.

Plug in AC adapter (leave battery out) and try to power up the laptop.

This sometimes works on dead R50 and R51 laptops.

You will need a motherboard to repair that problem.

Continuity tested disconnected DC-IN cable. Checked out ok. Removed allot of "stuff", examined board with light and magnifing glass........some dust, but nothing stareing back at me. Noticed funky keyboard being real "dirty" between the keys. Possible saw evidence of a liquid MAY have gone down between keys, and we know what that may have done. Tried different ac adaptor and nothing. :x I sometimes get obsesed with an problem
