Construction problem on thinkpad near optical drive (pics..)

#1 Post by Vasant56 » Thu Sep 30, 2004 7:58 pm

sorry, the pics are really low quality, but essentially the part of the laptop right on top of the optical drive seems really flimsy, almost as though I could break it off. The optical drive isn't flush with the system, and there are several millimeters of space between the two. I can pull, push and poke the board.

sorry for low quality, and I don't yet have photoshop to sharpen them up.

Thanks[/img]

The quality looks good, but they just look out of focus. Look at the letters IBM in the background, they are clear and crisp.

Mine had some space in the same place you speak of. I just sent it back, because it decided not to boot up.

I can't say if it's normal though, as it was my first ThinkPad.

ok, I think if both of ours have them, then it must be part of the build.

What are the chances finding a way to fix it? I could fit my credit card in that space.

you need to take a better photo..

and explain the problem in better detail..

i'm not sure where there can be a 3mm space..

i edited your post so the photos are linked rather than displayed..

ok, I'll try and use my roommates other camera when I can. Thanks, bill

edit: because I'm out to class for a little bit, I'll try and describe the error a little bit better:

on the side of the panel directly to the right of the keyboard (backspace, enter, shift etc), there's a small part of the laptop that is right on top of the optical drive. I can push it down and stuff, and it feels like I can pull it off. I'm not sure if this is the same problem that other people were complaining about, because when I push down on the part of the panel that is next to the ethernet plugs and stuff it seems fine.

I think my optical drive isn't sitting flush with the system, which is why it's like that. I've reinstalling it, but it seems the same.

edit: ...I had just woken up.

Your F key not working? :D

It's normal. It's a gap above the right side of the optical drive, correct? I have it on my KTU as well.

take the optical out, and look at how the plastic's connected to the metal chasis. if the plastic clip is in it's place (in the middle of the metal frame on the top) then there's not much you can do. I wouldn't worry too much about it though- just stop putting weight there :)

The gap is normal, and aside from aesthetics, I don't see that it is much of a problem. I've put my T40 through a lot over the past year and a half and not once has that admittedly flimsy piece of plastic caused any problems.

That plastic just isn't in an area where it will get stressed a lot.
