Viewing PDF's using Vista with Intel Graphics Accelerator

#1 Post by akurza2 » Tue Apr 10, 2007 11:17 pm

Hello,

This is my first post, with many to follow. I am trying to get to know my new T60, and computers in general, a little better.

The problem that I have is that I cant read PDF's. I believe Adobe 8 is not compatible with Vista? My situation is this, I have a Windows Vista and Intel Graphics Accelerator 32 bit, What would be the best was for me to look at PDF's?

Thank You

I'm using Adobe Reader 8 in Vista Business on my t60 and it works great.

You could search for another PDF reader or try an older version of Adobe 6 or 7.

You could use Foxit reader for pdf files, its free and it's works under Vista.

I am using Vista Enterprise and acrobat reader 8.0.0 with no problems. What are the specific problems you are encountering?

If the problem is viewing PDF's while on the internet, try this...
Launch Adobe Reader, choose: Edit > Preferences... > Internet, and uncheck box to Display PDF in browser. You might also uncheck box to Allow fast web view.

If you cannot view PDF files stored on your hard drive, you might have a NTFS permissions problem. In XP anyway, this can be fixed while booted in SAFE MODE. This issue often happens when copying files from one place to another. The only other thing I can think of is that Adobe Reader did not install properly. Try uninstalling it from Windows Add or Remove Programs, then reinstall it.

Gom,

Thanks for those tips. Everytime I access a .PDF file from the net, I cross my fingers that it doesn't hose my browser (Firefox) when Acrobat Reader (6.0 Professional) appears to get stuck in a loop (100% CPU utilization of Firefox).

Any idea what "Allow fast web view" does, or doesn't do when de-selected?

I am also thinking about trying Foxit Reader after seeing a review of it in PC Magazine several weeks ago.

When viewing a multi-page PDF on a slow connection, using Fast web view allows you to see the beginning pages quickly, and the subsequent pages with time. I have had problems with this and I have not used this feature for some months.

I have found that sometimes, if you try to view too far ahead in a PDF document, Adobe Reader hangs, and has to be closed. It seems to work faster anyway just to download the entire PDF file and then view it. File downloads work pretty good on a cellular connection - better than web browsing.

When I try to open a PDF online it asks me to install Adobe. When I install it, I get an error box from "Netopysytems Size Optimizer 1.0" that says "Another instance of this program is already running. You cannot run multiple instances at the same time." I then go to taks manager and see AdbeRdr80_en_US.exe running. I end that process. I continue the install end at the end I get an error message from Windows installer saying "The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. Free up space on the drive or verify that you have write permission on the Temp folder."

I do not know what Temp folder it is talking about. There is also no Adobe in the control panel, but adobe seems to be running somehow.

Hopefully I explained my problem clearly, and would appreciate any help. Also thanks for the quick responses.

Known problem: this will happen if User Account Control is turned off or if you are logged in using the default administrator account.

The temp folder is the one in your account profile. When you turn off User Account Control in Vista you loose access to this folder.

Thanks steve, that was exactly my problem. I had to turn off my UAC off for some reason when I had to install SecureW2 to access the wireless connection at school.

Should I leave the UAC on or off?

Thanks again

Good question. I leave mine off most of the time. Opinions on doing this will vary. For more info check this technet article:

Steveg47 is absolutely correct, leave UAC on until you completely install and get Abode 8 working then you can turn it off it you want to. This happend to me on my first Vista Business install, now I have it running fine with UAC turned off.

RE: problem with Adobe Reader on new T60p (XP os)

Just received my first T60p after benefiting greatly from this forum. Happily, I haven't run into significant problems and I've been able to fix the minor ones EXCEPT for opening pdf files from the internet or a memory stick. I've installed Adobe reader 8.0 but I get the same error message above when I try to open a pdf. When I say ok to the installer, it tries to install Reader 7.0 until it realizes that 8.0 is already installed and freezes. I CAN open Reader 8.0 and then open the file but this is a time-consuming workaround.

Any suggestions? I am running XP so the Vista fixes probably aren't applicable.

Thanks much. :D

You probably tried tihs but have you:

- Right clicked a .pdf
- Selected Open With.
- Selectd Choose default program
- Select the version of Adobe you wish to use as your default.
- Save.

I have Adobe Reader 8.0 and a full version of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 on a machine with Vista and I dont' have any trouble with .pdfs.

Thanks for the suggestion. Right-clicking on the pdf does work, but only for that file. :? I checked for other versions of Adobe reader but found none. I finally decided to uninstall Reader 8.0 and install a recommended alternative, Foxit. So far so good....
