USB problem on T42 XPPro SP2

#1 Post by dmcgibbo » Thu Sep 30, 2004 8:34 pm

i have a few USB devices and a USB hub that when I unplug it from my T42, a blue screen of death comes up and the computer restarts.

It has a message about it restarting to protect my machine, if something was installed recently blah blah blah. Do you know why this happens? I've tried stopping all the devices first but some of them can't be stopped b/c it says they are busy...

Interesting to note is that a USB 2.0 hub does not work on my PC and my high speed USB external drive won't work unless I connect it through my slow speed old USB hub and this is what's causing the problem. I've tried to figure out why, uninstalling USB hosts and controllers, but haven't been able to troubleshoot this problem (and neither has IBM, Maxtor, Microsoft)...

I had a similar problem with a USB 2.0 flash drive which would result in a blue screen when first plugged in after upgrading to SP2. I found the problem was the small security program that came with the flash dive that would start up on insertion. When I uninstalled the software the flash drive worked perfectly. The company just upgraded their security software to work with SP2 which means there must be some significant changes to the way SP2 handles the USB port. So look for driver updates for your USB devices or buy newer ones that will work.
