IE Problems

#1 Post by Snowman88 » Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:39 pm

Hi all. I'm running a brand new T60 Widescreen with Windows XP Pro and IE 7. I'm having a few issues with IE 7 and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

First, IE will momentarily freeze occasionally when I launch it. That is, nothing will display on the browser for about 3 seconds and I won't be able to type anything in the address bar, and then it normally launches the page. I'd say this happens maybe one out of every 4 times; every other time, it launches the page immediately.

The second problem I've noticed is that IE 7 will randomly crash, PARTICULARLY on the Lenovo support site. I'm not at home right now so I can't replicate the crash and give the error message, but it seems to happen without fail on the Lenovo site, particularly when I'm having it detect my system configuration.

In case it helps, I am running Norton AntiVirus 10.1.4 with real-time protection and Windows Defender. Neither have identified any spyware or viruses. Is this likely an IE problem or could it be a more fundamental problem with my system?

Thanks all!

I don't want to kick in an open door, but if you get Firefox instead, you'd experience a much nicer browsing, and it's a lot safer still than IE.

Q: why do you need to have your TP recognized so often? Do it once, then bookmark that Lenovo page.

I have IE7, XP Pro and Symantec Client Security (which includes Norton Anti Virus). I also have client with the above. In all cases, no reports of issues.

None of the machines above have Windows Defender loaded. So look to the following:
1. Windows Defender (although I have no evidence for saying so).
2. Temporary files (Your IE Cache too big? Set it to 50Mb or less).
3. Spyware as you suggest (Run Ad-Aware).

To point to, run the Disk Cleanup wizard and dump temporary, log and trash files (but don't compress old files and don't dump Office 2003 setup files and cache).

I see this lag time on my X41 also, most noticeably when I open a new window of IE7, but also Firefox and sometimes Excel too. All three use tcp sockets to talk to their backends.

I don't use Windows Defender or Norton. So, I wonder if one of the windows security patches had something to do with it.

Since I have another X41, this without any patch installed, I can test them side by side. And what a performance degradation from the original XP(SP2) and one fully patched...

Hi all. Thanks for the responses.

I am definitely considering the switch to Firefox, but I usually like IE 7 a lot and was happy with it on my old machine, so the preferable solution would be just to get IE working optimally.

I am hesitant to look at Windows Defender as the problem, because I just installed that a day or two and the problem pre-dates Windows Defender. If AdAware is more thorough, I will run a scan with that as well.

I don't need to detect my system often; I just noticed that's something that inevitably provokes a crash. Otherwise, it seems that the Lenovo site just randomly crashes my IE Browser when I'm on their support page.

I will try out AdAware and dump the temporary files, cache, etc. In the meantime, does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks again.

A new tab in IE 7 opens for me in about a second. I am fully patched (as of Yesterday's emergency Patch Tuesday). ... JDH

I agree that Firefox provides a better browsing experience, but not for what the OP specifically asked for . . . You cannot use Firefox with Lenovo's 'detect my system' utility (unless you have added ActiveX controls to Firefox, which I understand dramatically reduces the 'safety' of Firefox . . . ) I'm at a loss as to why IE crashes at the point of detecting his system, but using Firefox will only get a kind apology from the good people at Lenovo ("You don't have an ActiveX enabled browser.")

@ Snowman88, you might want to take a look at this: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... e/ie7.mspx as it explains a bit about how to enable ActiveX controls in IE7. Good luck.

Hello all and thanks for your continued help. I don't really care about the system detection function; I just meant that as an example of how the browser repeatedly crashes. So you think it's an ActiveX problem with the software? And how about the momentary freezing on every 4th launch or something - should I assume it's just an IE thing or could I have some problem with my OS?

Thanks again all, I really appreciate it.

Well, I thought ActiveX might be part of the 'crash-when-using-"detect-my-system"-on-the-Lenovo-site' problem. As for the 'intermittent-stalling-on-startup' problem, I don't have a clue . . .

Thanks for the replies. That's interesting - I didn't know that I could launch IE with no add-ons like that. I will play around with that and report back with what happens. In the meantime, my IE randomly crashed while I was on google, and here was the "add-on" that was listed as causing the problem: tvt_pwm_com.dll

Thanks
