Sent wrong Product Recovery CDs?
Greetings all!
I recently acquired a T41 2378-DGU. The machine had an installed OS and I confirmed that everything was working properly, but decided to proceed with a complete restore from factory restore discs. I called support and ordered a set of discs which arrived today.
I got eight discs—"Rescue and Recovery" with Rapid Restore Disc 1 of 1, and "Product Recovery CD for Thinkpad R51, T42, T42p Type 1829, 1830, 1831, 1836, 1840, 1841, 2373, 2374, 2378, 2379" Discs 1-7.
I have been trying to boot from "Product Recovery CD" Disc 1 but have been unable to do so—the system does not seem to recognize this as a bootable disc. I have confirmed that the machine boots from retail Windows install discs without issue.
Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong or did I get the wrong set of discs from support? (I'm concerned that the latter might be a possibility since the T41 model is not listed on the CD as a supported machine, even though the machine type, 2378, is listed).
Much obliged!

call IBM and verify that they sent you the right recovery CDs -- i called them about X31 CDs and they sent me X30s (although the machine type number appeared on both sets)parvulesco wrote:Greetings all!

I repair these machines daily. I can't even get a set of discs that says T41 on them. I don't think that they make them to be honest, but maybe they're just proned to shipping alternatives.
I would've expected the first disk to be bootable. In fact, I've NEVER gotten a T41 to load using the Rescue and Recovery disc prior to the machine specific recovery discs. Whenever I tried to run it, it would run all the discs and then kick an error saying "product recovery failed during the convertion phase". After much frustration, I found out that the onlly way to avoid that was to boot straight from disc one... atleast in my experience.

"They" (IBM) made the CD's. I have a set. The T41 I have does not support R&R which is why the R&R method doesn't work.mitchellst wrote:I repair these machines daily. The best way to reimage has been covered elsewhere: Delete all partitions with FDISK and fix (clear) the Master Boot Record. These actions "clear" the hard drive to a like-new condition. Then the disks load properly and perform a proper recovery. ... JDH
Yes, they did make T41 Recovery CDs - I have a set also. However, IBM probably don't have them any more. The T42 discs should be backward compatible if you can get them to boot.

In case anyone is interested in how this turned out:
Got the replacement set of Product Recovery CDs. Five discs, labeled "Product Recovery CD for ThinkPad T41, T41p, R50, R50p, Type 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833, 1836"; P/N 24R8116, dated November 2004. I successfully booted from Disc 1 and restored without incident.
Thanks again!

The two machines I have (Netvista and ThinkPad) did not need to be implemented immediately (three years or more ago). I called up IBM (at the time), said I was changing the hard drive (at the time) and got free recovery CD's (at the time).
Both sets were defective! I called and got new sets for each machine, and recovered them fully before implementing.
1. IBM makes incorrect CD's
2. I know mine work - Priceless!
