Hello group,
I have a 760L laptop with a bad hard drive (740 meg) and am in the
process of replacing it with a 1.2 gig (Hitachi)
The system won't recognize it - keep getting a 174 error message when
it is connected (pressing F1 does not bring up the EZ-Setup menu) -
Without the drive EZ-Setup works fine.
The order I have is PCMCIA, Floppy, and then HD1 - Is this correct?
I've replaced both batteries under the keyboard cover.
Is there some low level formatting utility or installation process I need
to do to get the drive recognized by the IBM BIOS?
The drive is OK as I can connect it to a Desktop PC with an adapter.
I see references to Diskette Factory, but do not have this or any other
diskettes that would normally come with the laptop.
Have downloaded all availablr utilities from the IBM website but am lost
as to which one to use or in what order.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you installed the drive properly in the caddy?
Are there any wire jumpers or bent pins on the drive in the cluster of 4 pins?
Have you damaged the caddy (specifically the flexible cable) during drive installation?
First test would be to install the drive with only the flex calble from the caddy and make sure that it spins up. It is entirely possible that your new drive is dead, too.
Hope this helps.

Another problem besides a bad connection between the HD and caddy or caddy and comp might be that the caddy is messed up. I used to have a 760ED and I tried to replace the HD, and I messed up the ribbon cable on the caddy just enough to make it not work and need replacing but not enough to be visible to the eye. Before assuming that problem though, because that is almost worst case, make sure you have a good connection between the HD and caddy and caddy and comp, you also need to make sure the HD is less than 6gb, otherwise, the 760 won't recognize it. Also try testing your old drive in the caddy, but be careful, that ribbon cable tears EASILY.
