That's too bad that the drivers didn't work...... Have you had the drive bay tested to make sure that it is indeed working? You could be on a wild goose chase only to find out that it's defective/broken.

** THIS ISNT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART***

Portable Drive Bay 2000 and Windows XP

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45462

Symptom
Portable Drive Bay 2000 does not work in Microsoft Windows XP

Affected configurations
All ThinkPad systems with the Portable Drive Bay 2000 attached and running Windows XP

Solution
Attach the USB connector to the ThinkPad first and let Windows XP detect the device. The drive should work at this point. No additional drivers are required nor are additional drivers available. If the PCMCIA connection is required, then the device may work if connected after the USB connection is made and the device is recgonized.

good point.
the one i purchased was brand new, in unopened box. The green light powered on, the cd spun up, and was recognized (though with error) in windows.

I could send it back for "replacement" but if i get the same thing I have to pay again to return the other one.

Thought I'd post my experience with a Portable Drive Bay (PDB) 2000 and one of my T23s. Just received the PDB from another member here (who beat me in the original eBay auction) and upon plugging into the T23 via the USB cable, it wasn't seen by Windows XP. The three AA batteries were fully charged but the green power light never came on, nor did the tray eject button work. I saw that the PDB takes a 5V 2A external supply and after a quick check of my equipment shelf, I found a power supply from one of my Veo cameras with the proper voltage, current, plug polarity and size. Plugged it in and booted the T23 and there was drive "E"! Changed the BIOS boot sequence to removable, IBA, CDROM then hard drive. Re-booted the system with a PC Doctor CD in the external drive and the T23 loaded it! It's slow but completely functional.

I got playing around with mine again and lo & behold it found it when plugged into the PCMCIA, (XP). I tried the USB but wouldn't see it. I found that if I wiggled the power supply connection on the back of the PDB it would see it, (even though the green light was on).

heres the deal, xp WILL work with the portable drive bay, drive bay 2000, pc card adapter, or the usb adapter. to use the usb adapter, you MUST use external power. you are having a irq conflict with other devices. to get mine to work, i had to disable
the modem, sound, printer, and paralel ports in the device manager. after you free up the resorces, it will work.
you can then slowly return the devices you are using one at a time.
i think xp assigns irq's and com address in a different order, and that causes conflicts. also, the portable drive bays are extreamly slow, perhaps using them with a usb 2 pc card would help. i think that the portable drive bay pci adapter is identicle to the drive bay 2000 pci adapter, but have different
part numbers.all the portable drive bay parts interchange, except
that the actual drive bay housing is different to accomodate different
cd roms (and the actual cd roms are identicle, just the adapters
and covers different.) adrian

Of course, I just bought this portable Drive bay 2000, and I can't get it to work with Win XP Pro SP2

Maybe I'll have better success with Win 2000?

I'm gonna go plug it into my dad's Gateway running Win98, and see if it works there.

The gateway was a no-go.....for now. It takes about 20 min for it to start up as well, so I lost patience.

IBM has this to say: "This device may require the use of an additional interrupt resource (IRQ). It may be necessary on some ThinkPad systems to disable one feature (i.e. the hot / warm swap feature of the UltraBay, Infrared or serial port, etc.) to enable this device."

so I went into thinkpad configuration, and disabled my modem, the serial port, the infared port, and the parallel port. I installed the latest drivers for win2000, and plugged it into the USB. It worked!
Then into the other PCIMCIA thingy, and it worked as well!

I'm listening to Gin Blossoms on it right now. Hope this helps!

Just for the record:

My X20 boots from PDB2000 with CD-Rom attached
so you can use it to install an OS from CD.
