Flush USB 2.0 PCMCIA card?

#1 Post by Gerbil » Thu Apr 12, 2007 9:41 pm

Does anyone know of a PCMCIA card offering flush mounted USB 2.0 ports? For example, I used to have a Xircom PCMCIA LAN/modem combo card for my old Thinkpad 600e to add the necessary data ports without a ridiculous bulge on the side of the machine. I'd prefer a similar solution for USB 2.0 on my T30.

So now instead of a bulge, you've got a cable sticking out? How is that better?

*nod* I'd prefer to stick a card in and never remove it. With that solution, I'd still have to remove something. Actually, I got a great deal on the T30; I may sell it and upgrade to a T4x to bypass this whole deal...

Good point bopchie, but I agree with Gerbil - It would be great to have a card that is out of the way when not being used that has the USB type A connectors built-in and ready to go.

If anyone else knows about a card like this, please let us know!

i agree with ya both... i have looked for them in the past and this was as close as i ever came to finding a flush mount one :(...it would be nice, you would think that by now they would all be flush mount...a flushmout 5.1 sound card and a flushmount multi-card reader would be great!

Sure: The IBM ThinkPad USB 2.0 CardBus Adapter, FRU 32P5080. It's a standard size PCMCIA card with no bulges. It's also thin enough to leave the other slot usable. It comes with a "dongle" cable that plugs into the card and has 2 USB connectors on the other end. They are a bit pricey -- almost $50 on eBay a few years back.

Hey, that kind of adapter could be handy, do you have any idea on where could I get one here in Australia? eBay is out of question, unfortunately... :(

There's another post of someone who modified thier USB 2.0 to make it flush here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=41792 He said that he lost power to it though, and it's not as powerful as a stock card. Get in touch with them and you might be able to get one made? ':??:'

I don't believe in those dongle type cards.

All it is is going back to the 80s and 90s where you lose the cable and you're screwed.
