R31 LCD backlight problem

#1 Post by JG » Fri Apr 13, 2007 1:25 pm

R31 boots up, but backlight sometimes does not come on for several minutes--sometimes not at all without further off/on tries. Same when returning from standby. Once on, light stays on. Does this sound like a failing inverter board or some other problem?

Sounds like the inverter to me. It would be the cheapest thing to try anyway.

If you're getting red tint or any other video problems, then it could be a failing LCD, but it sounds like the inverter.

Thanks. Would it be worth first trying reconnecting the cables to the inverter before ordering a new one? I've heard that the contacts can oxidize and cause a bad connection.

I'm not sure about that, but I guess it could be possible. I would try toggling the sleep/standby button that the lid hits when you close it.

I've heard people talk about that button/switch sticking, which may be possible... however... I was working on an R31 the other day that had the same problem. When I toggled that switch, it would either make it go into standby, or make the backlight come back on/off depending on how hard I pressed it. Anyway, it ended up being the FL inverter. I guess if it completely failed, then that probably wouldn't work, but if it's intermittent, then it may be worth testing.

Good luck either way.
