Input on purchasing choices

#1 Post by evforme » Fri Apr 13, 2007 8:14 pm

After going back and forth with all the different choices for my new T60 purchase, it's essentially come down to the UXGA vs. the widescreen display.

UXGA:
Core Duo - 2 GHz
4x DVD writer
FireGL v5200
Intel wireless card w/ a/b/g support

Widescreen:
Core 2 Duo - 2 GHz
I plan on picking up a 100 GB 7200 RPM drive to swap out w/ the included 80 GB 5400 RPM drive and use this one in an external enclosure. => I will only have one drive for the UXGA and having an extra drive would be nice.
FireGL v5250
8x DVD DL writer
Thinkpad wireless card w/ a/b/g/n support

The prices come around to be within $30 of one another, with the UXGA being more. So effectively I'm losing a bit of performance in the rest of the areas of the computer to compensate for a much better display. Since I'm interacting with the display the most, it seems most logical that I should invest the most there. The wide viewing angles appeals to me the most (I've been around nice Samsung PVA and Dell IPS displays). Would the widescreen TN display still be anywhere near acceptable? Thoughts? Which package would you choose?

I'm also a semi-professional online poker player, so I would like to stare at the monitor for 6-10 hours at a time with minimal eye strain. Supposedly the IPS display is superior in this category, or am I misinformed?

Can you scale the size of the images displayed in this game? If you cannot, a UXGA screen might make things so small that you'd get more eye strain than if you use lower-resolution screens.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I can, but typically I can place 4 tables without any overlap in a 1600x1200 display. I don't mind the overlap, but the less overlap I have, the more tables I can add.

I see. A 15" UXGA screen has 133.3 dots per inch (DPI) whereas a 15.4" WSXGA+ screen has 128.6 DPI, so things would look slightly bigger in the latter. But you have 8.8% more pixels in the UXGA screen and so it should be easier to tile four tables. And of course the UXGA's Flexview would look nicer. So, it looks like the UXGA Flexview has more advantages.
