Changes since 2005 IBM to completely Lenovo

#1 Post by ryengineer » Fri Apr 13, 2007 8:45 pm

I was not sure where to place it so I chose off topic stuff.

Z60m 2Ghz, 2GB, 100GB HDD 15.4 TFT/XGA 2 Yrs. warranty.[Titanium lid]

Well this has been sold today on ebay.

Before parting this machine I did some comparison of minor, some silly things between it and some new Lenovo model.

This baby was bought during the start of Lenovo era in late 2005 when they were still taking over IBM's Personal Computing Division so it still had many elements of IBM in it.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... r/80-1.jpg

1. AC adapter comparison:

Older ones still had IBM logo and trademark saying "Registered trademark of International Business Machines". No chinise language at all. For usage it said "For IBM personal computer use only". On the other side you can see thinkpad logo in white color with a red dotted "i".

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ryengineer/1.jpg

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/45.jpg

Apart from Lenovo logo and trademark they also added chinise language all over newer ones. Oddly this one said "For use with information technology equipment and indoor use only" but info technology equipment can be anything, even apart from a computer system?
On the other side of this one you can see lenovo logo punched and imprinted with no apparent color other than black.

2. Model number view:

Older ones did not have any lenovo logo on the lower lcd area where you can usually see your model #.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/78.jpg

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/77.jpg

3. Box:

Older ones were marked "Sealed for quality by IBM" but newer ones did not have any such seal apart from the locking tape.

However there was lenovo logo on newer ones and both had "thinkpad" named printed boxes.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... er/234.jpg

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/79.jpg

4. Battery:

Both batteries looked similar but like the ac adapters, newer ones had lenovo's logo and trademark and the older ones IBM's.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/90.jpg

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/46.jpg

5. Sticker:

Older ones came with a sticker with IBM logo at the top. Newer ones don't have any logo but they both state the same stuff.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/ ... eer/68.jpg

6. Plastic Bag:

Older ones had a very durable bag which cannot be "fingered" and put into two pieces, but you can if you get really wild at it. Newer ones had a very cheap quality plastic material though. But who cares?

Lastly this topic is clearly not intended at buying or not buying Thinkpads, I wonder who won't considering these silliest things.

Nice info.
As an aside, to stop the page-width from going beyond its intended size, there is this nice website
where you can convert a long URL into a very small one:
http://tinyurl.com

Your long link converted is: http://tinyurl.com/2dxe4j and does exactly the same.
Good site to bookmark!

My Z60m was made in August of 2006, but it does not have the Lenovo Logo under the LCD screen. It does however have the Lenovo Power brick and stickering on the underside.

It's sad to see the IBM logo leaving us nowdays. A lot of people are always asking me about which laptops I recommend and unless they're savvy you have to go into the explanation about "well yes it used to be IBM but now it's Lenovo and blah blah blah, but they are still quality machines even though Lenovo bought the blah blah blah".

Sometimes I just want to say "buy a Dell". :(

Frankly from where I come from and what I've seen, most people if not all don't know what thinkpad is. But if you tell them about IBM laptops/notebooks their eyes will get wider thinking of one of the best notebook makers since old times whose products rock.

Do you guys think that Lenovo is trying to gradually make the Thinkpads look more and more like their own 3000 line, and eventually merge the two lines?

Quite a few people in my department at Brown University use Thinkpads.

I am not sure but think perhaps eventually they will. They will remove the Thinkpad logo for sure though:
Lenovo will be the preferred supplier of PCs to IBM and will be allowed to use the IBM brand for five years under an agreement that includes the "Think" brand. Big Blue has promised to support the PC maker with marketing and via its IBM corporate sales force.
