T60p w/ IPS UXGA on Lenovo Outlet!
I don't know if this comparison will help. The T42p is a 2378-EZU with SN of 99-HB309, could someone look up which screen that is?okashira wrote: Please do. I'l remind you...Get some nice fullscreen wallpapers with plenty of contrast and color. I (we) would appreciate it.
I just compared them side-by-side, the T60p LG SXGA+ has better, more saturated, brighter colors. The LG SXGA+ is slightly brighter, even after losing some brightness (in the blue mostly - down from 172cd/m2 to 147 cd/m2) since I got it in January - another story and one that gives me great angst! The T42p screen is 132 cd/m2 which is not too much lower because the brightness we see is in a logarithmic relationship to cd/m2 not linear.
The LG has a bit more "shimmer" than the UXGA screen, which some people really don't like but doesn't particularly bother me.
I profiled the T42p UXGA screen with Monaco Optix Pro, with that profile applied it matches the LG screen for good color when viewing images with a color-managed application like ACDSee Pro or Lightroom or Photoshop. However, for normal work, games, and videos, which are not color managed, the LG has superior color.
Of course the UXGA screen has more resolution. Both have great viewing angles.

This is still going to be a great laptop, don't worry. The Flexview technology is way better than most laptop screens, and its UXGA.2 Bricks Short wrote:Dangit! That's a terrible image for judging color. Much better to use the "Autumn" and "Bliss" scenes from Windows desktop.Troels wrote:Does anyone know where to get the picture of the dogs in

But please note that this LCD is sorta damaged because some idiot mailed it to me wrapped in thick paper.
(i.e. i have seen better pics) .. also, it ought to be a little more yellow than it turned out.

Yeah, you have to take white balance into account. Who knows what white balance you camera picked. The best way to do this is put the two screens side by side for identical conditions.Troels wrote:http://kom.aau.dk/~oesteraa/Idtech/

Yes Lenovo is within their rights to send me any EQUIVALENT display they like. If this one is equivalent to the other two options,WPWoodJr wrote: I'm sympathetic that you may not get the screen you hoped for, but I can't fault Lenovo either since they are sending an UXGA Flexview, as advertised. My computer has begun to make it's way from China. I know from what has been posted here that the IDtech screen may not be a bitter disappointment but... Oh well, I have a 21' Samsung widescreen on the way anyway
I can't say that I am glad that I did this. I am finding out that even once I get past the screen, getting a stick of memory in this thing may not be the easiest task, and for those of us who would rather not do the processor upgrade ourselves, finding someone to do it for us may not be so easy either.

I think you took my laptop. The last I check last night it was scheduled to ship today. I checked this morning and it was pushed back until 4/23.
Didn't your date get moved up?
Did I miss something, is there an issue with adding another stick of memory?
I was also looking to swap the processor. Hopefully when the Quads come out the C2D will come down more.
I had originally ordered and cancelled a t60p ws, I still think I will be happier with the better (than wsxga+) display and the overall narrower machine.

When I ordered my computer, they gave me a 4/16 ship date. They moved it back to 4/18. On 4/18 they moved it back to 4/20 and then shipped it. If I were you I would look for that ship notification to come today.WarrenInDe wrote:2 Bricks Short

I thought I read about some minor problems with the memory upgrade. Problems with the way things fit when they went back together.
I had hoped to upgrade my processor when Santa Rosa (or is it Santa Cruz, or Santa Monica, or Santa Fontana) comes out next month. My problem is that I do not want to do it myself. I would like to take the memory stick and the processor in to someone and spare myself the grief of installing either.

You can find detailed instructions for how to do this in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.2 Bricks Short wrote:I thought I read about some minor problems with the memory upgrade. Problems with the way things fit when they went back together.
Yes, I remember someone on this forum having difficulty putting the palmrest back after adding a RAM stick. But that's just one person. There will always be a few people who have certain problems (like adding a RAM module to a T60p), or a few people who can't tolerate any screen other than the absolute best one in the world. That doesn't mean you'll also experience these problems. So, try not to worry too much. The 2623DDU should be an excellent machine for most people.

Having the same two laptops as WPWoodJr, I concur 100%. The IDTech FV screen is still awesome, and the only reason it lost some of its luster (pun intended) is only due to the admittedly exquisite color of the LG SXGA+. WPWoodJr's later comparison between the two is a very accurate assessment. Prior to the SG on my T60, I thought the color on my IDTech was extremely good (it's all relative). The IDTech may even have slightly better viewing angles, at least for bland Cygwin/XTerm windows on the screen (their colors remain precisely the same across the entire screen while the same windows on the SXGA+ change just ever so slightly from more extreme angles--and I mean slight because you wouldn't notice it if you weren't looking for it).WPWoodJr wrote:This is still going to be a great laptop, don't worry. If you're a software developer like myself and stare at static text on simple Cygwin/XTerm windows, or even a IDE like Eclipse or MS Visual Studio, then the higher resolution of the IDTech is "better" than the LG. And the text is naturally crisper and more precise as well.
If you're into multi-media stuff where accurate color rendering is critical, then the SG is definitely the better choice.

Mine shipped on the 18th, has the same (supposedly) IDTech screen. I got a deal on the R50p (same FlexView screen I think) from a friend so I'm thinking about selling the one I ordered; I posted it in the marketplace already. I work mainly w/ photos so I don't think this will be a huge upgrade from the used notebook I just bought.
We have the R50p at work, the screen is not as good as the T42p - not as bright. sinden, another good thing about the R50p is you can replace the UXGA LCD with a QXGA (2048×1536) one.

I would be interested to see how the desktop looks in that case and how the graphics adapter performs when it has to push that much data to a screen with that high a resolution.

More info in this thread. I learned about the R50p's QXGA in that thread.Bing0 wrote:I had no idea that there was a display with resolution that high.
A 15.0" QXGA display has 170.7 dots per inch. By contrast, the highest-DPI laptop display I've used is 15.4" WUXGA @ 147 DPI. I don't think I can tolerate 170.7 DPI!

Ragtopgeek, So you prefer the 4:3 vs 16:10 aspect ratio for coding? I am looking for a laptop and will be coding in Eclipse using the LCD at times. Normally, it will be attached to an external monitor, but will definitely use it standalone.
I have been looking for quite awhile and, like many others, have been wondering about Santa Rosa since it is almost here now (supposedly May 9th). I may wait now for 2 reasons: see exactly what the next gen Thinkpads are all about and see if laptops built on the previous gen mobile platform come down in price.
