Alas no screen expansion, Fn and Spacebar.
Went to support drivers and download to no avail.
Then I thought of ThinkVantage Productivity Center.
That did not work.
So back to the drivers download site.
Found it 10 mb download.

Fn-Spacebar produces lower resolution from standard 1200x1600 resolution..

using the spare XP preload from my other T60p..

works fine with little complain due to different hardware..

yahoo.... Order Status changed to shipped. I don't see a Serial number listed.

Will I get some kind of shipping confirmation email with it?

I see is says tracking info will not be available until the morning after shipment.

You will get a shipping email and the tracking will be available as promised. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that your agony will increase over the next few days if, like me, it appears that your laptop has been stuck with UPS in China for four days. Having done this before I know that this is probably not the case but you will wish that someone would at least update the status.

Can someone tell me if there is a way to tell for sure that this box will accept the T7600 upgrade or should I not be concerned about it? I would like to be sure before I buy the CPU.

Where are you getting your c2d, I was thinking of doing the same. I'm also looking around for another stick (1 or 2 gig) of RAM.

Refurb? Really? Where does this wisdom come from?
Just because that site is called the Lenovo Outlet. Proteus was confusing it with the IBM Certified Used Equipment site, which does sell refurbished items.

I have not found a place to buy yet. I am still price shopping. Right now the best that I have found is in the $700 area. I hope to find a reasonable source today or tomorrow. The next challenge will be the installation.

I bought 1 gig of ram from Newegg last week.

A question for anyone who has recieved their T60p 2623-DDU:

Does it still have the classic IBM Thinkpad logo in the lower right corners?

Yes, except for the tiny fonts on some sites that don't scale.

I haven't seen that one before.

UPS hasn't updated the status on mine in five days now but I have figured it out. It's being transported on the back of a yak. If it isn't in Kentucky, where it will hit another speed bump, by today, UPS will not make their promised delivery date of the 26th. "Shipped" does not mean much.

I could be wrong but I am not getting the impression that many people have actually received this box. Maybe it is too soon.

Mine was in KY by Friday ... and is still there, 4 days later, bouncing between import scans, waiting for customs clearance, and being misrouted. Yay. The tracking info still says it should be delivered today, but I doubt it.

Well. That familiar message showed up on the UPS Tracking page.

LOUISVILLE,
KY, US

THE SHIPMENT IS BEING HELD BY BROKERAGE FOR REASONS BEYOND UPS' CONTROL

Now this is what I call progress. From the back of a yak to Louisville just like that. Amazing!

I would still like for someone to put me out of my misery regarding the processor change. I have not found a step-by-step on how to do it myself (if I can). I do not know how to find a reliable place to do it for me. Any feedback, including verbal abuse, would be appreciated.

UPS International says that the container my laptop is in hasn't cleared customs yet and despite what the website says their system has it scheduled for tomorrow which might or might not happen depending on customs.

Regarding the processor change: I think once you get the keyboard out it will be obvious. Take off the palm-rest and keyboard and you will be looking at the heatsink. I don't even think you have to take the bezel around the keyboard off to get the heatsink out, but you may. The CPU has no pins -- just pads -- so once the heatsink is off you can pull the CPU out with your fingers.

Which CPU will you be putting in? The 2.33's price is a little rich for me!

Thank you. I believe that Lenovo provides the instructions on their site for removing the pieces that you have mentioned so I can probably manage this myself. The last remaining mystery wil be a verivication of the motherboard rev.

I plan to install a T7600. I have it priced at about $650 with free shipping. I am financing some of it by selling off some unused gear from my portable hi-fi hobby. My better judgement tells me that I should wait for the Santa Rosa to hit and see if there are price reductions on the current processors but I don't know if the reductions will come fast enough, or be significant enough, to warrant the wait.

2 Bricks, if I were you I would wait and use the Core Duo for awhile. Performance is not going to be THAT much better, in the meantime you can wait for pricing to settle down.

2 bricks, go with the service manual instructions instead of mine. From the pics it looks like the CPU has a pin-grid array and goes into a slide-lock connector with locking CAM rather than using contact pads as I thought it did.

Will the Santa Rosa chips be compatible with our motherboards?

Edit: To be more accurate -- assuming new CPUs come out with the release of Santa Rosa, will they be compatible with the T60 MoBo? I am guessing there will be new CPUs because I've seen speeds of 2.2 and 2.4 (rather than 2.16 and 2.33). Of course, that makes it look like there will be a different FSB speed so perhaps not.

The wiser heads can correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the answer is no. I believe that Santa Rosa requires a different chipset.

Darren: just got off the phone with UPS, and they say mine was finally cleared from Customs sometime this afternoon and that I should expect it tomorrow or Thursday. I'm betting yours is in the same shipment, so it may be clear as well.

Looks like Intel has succedded in confusing people.

Santa Rosa is the chipset (platform). The santa rosa chipset/platform will actually be using the same core 2 duos (the processor) however they will not be interchangable between santa rosa and our current chipset because of the different cpu sockets.

While we are at it.
When I boot up
I see a thing about loging on for fingerprint set up and then
with the full screen a button on the desktop to activate
the security chip.

I don't think that I want either.

So is it ok to just delete the programs?

Yup - fine to delete Client Security Solutions and the fingerprint reader software from Add/Remove Programs. You can put them back if you want to play with them later and that way bumping the fingerprint reader won't pause your machine.

For those waiting on machines, rest assured that a week or so in broker hold/customs is not at all unusual. Having received a lot of ThinkPads, I can testify that this is the norm rather than the exception. Don't try to understand the descriptions on UPS's site because they make no sense. Just know that when you finally stop looking for the thing it will show up at your door.

I think the only added benefit the Santa Rosa platform will provide is their (NAND?) flash memory that's supposedly used as some sort of prefetch. I think it's called Robson. The processors are still the same C2Ds. Are they using a different socket?

Just when I was about to get my laptop, supposedly the package is "lost" at my local hub according to UPS. I've called IBM and they said wait another day before calling back to report it lost and they'll do something about it then. I wonder where it's getting delivered to...
