It has arrived. UPS also brought my second 1gig stick of ram from newegg.

Is everyone burning a windows cd from the system and doing a clean install?

I did do a clean install on my work t60P when I got it, but I'm not sure if I had to.

Should I go ahead and open my box now? Is it safe? It's still sitting here in my office. I have been waiting to read of the disaster that someone found when they turned theirs on. So far, nothing. What gives?

Could it be that it really is better than this ACER Aspire that I have been using since my T42 died?

When I called the regular line for availability, two reps told me they were all sold out. When I called the EPP line, they told me they had some in stock (10 day backorder), but I could still purchase one.

I'm going to do a clean install of XP Pro. What Thinkvantage things do you guys think are neccessary?

System Update, Active Protection, Power Manager, etc.

Download ethernet driver and system update with another computer, install in that order and then run system update and let it install all the other drivers from there.

I received mine yesterday and:

I am happy with the quality of this display so far.
It seems excellent to me with no dead pixels and rich even saturation with no noticeable bleeding of the backlight.

I am upgrading from an A31P (which is quite a sizable leap) and this machine build quality is excellent. I am really impressed with it thus far.

As for whether to do a clean install or not:
I reccommend using the Thinkvantage button during boot up and then doing a custom install of the factory preload.
I was able to select which applications to install and the final product is absolutely the same as if I had done it the long way.
Installation was seamless and fully automated. The machine seems to have a noticeable improvement in general performance after the custom install as well.

If there is anyone still second guessing their decision to purchase this notebook, I would say, in my opinion, you do not need to think twice.

Go for it.

Please bear with me. This is not my area of expertise.

I downloaded the ethernet update. Unless I missed it, there is nothing on the list called a "system update".

I am guessing that I am supposed to move the files to the new box after the download, run the ethernet update first, and then run the system update.

Basically what he is saying is the way to do all of the updates easily after a clean install is to use system update.
But you will need to manually install the drivers to enable your ethernet or wireless or whatever adapter you are using to connect to the Internet first.

Then you will be able to get system update softare and all subsequent software from there. After a fresh install I always just use a thumb drive.

It is really pretty intuitive just look for the option to resore to factory state and somewhere at the bottom is a custom option.
The list will come up for you to uncheck the applications that you do not want.
I only saw the screen once but it seemed pretty straight forward.
Relatively safe too when you consider that you are not running the risk of losing anything but time.

Here's my comparison:

Black color:
Straight
IDTech - grey/black, Id say dark ash, non uniform, leaking backligh
Hydis - black/dark violet - uniform, no leakage

Angles:
right or left sides
IDTech - definite backlight leaking
Hydis - almost same as straight, excellent, hardly any leakage [can say none]

bottom [looking down up]:
IDTech - same grey/black/ash color, minimal leakage
Hydis - dark violet color

Top to bottom:
IDTech - grey/black, minimal leakage, or same as other angles
Hydis - that is the angle where you can see the backlight leaking. Probably the worst angle/spot for Hydis. Still black/dark violet color.

Just in reference to that particular angle - color picture looks better on IDTech [angle of 140-180 or so, going as far as possible to expose imperfections]. On Hydis it look swashed dull.
Overall comparison, this i sthe only bad angle for Hydis, whil for IDTech, this is th eonly good one... [except straight of course]

On a black screen, I definitely liky Hydis more

Response time - Hydis clear winner. IDTech leaves noticeable tail.

White
idtech - white/yellow
hydis - white [cold white], excellent

red - looking straight,hydis has darker/richer red
Frop top washes into pink, idtech stays same red, but all other sides - IDtech goins into pink.

Other colors, could not tell the difference much.
Ecept if you were to have a picture with a sky in it, on Hydis it looks more violet [impossible to notice without comparing the two]

Now, the IDTech had TPFLX color profile installed, while Hydis had nothing. My expectation woul dbe with same profile, Hydis will look even better, and possibly fix the violet.

Overall Hydis to me is better.

If one were to get one, get th elatest sRGB panel, it is worth every penny.

Just for refernce, My T42p screen [uxga, idtech], looks worse than T60p IDtech.

It is evern more yellow [on white], and colors a bit duller.

But thanks for the comparison. It's weird, i can't tell the red color changes it's hue except on one specific angle on my T42p, 150 or so degrees from the lower right... Guess there are differences

FWIW, my screen doesn't look like Dimitri_P's and it was listed as an ID Tech. The only way I can see backlight (on a black screen) is to push the monitor flat and look at the top edge. The black looks purple when viewed from the extreme sides, but not within what I would consider a typical viewing angle, and there is no backlight leakage.

As for white being yellow, I cannot imagine a white being any cooler than what I see. In fact, my desktop display which I considered a reference for good grey looks a little yellow now.

I can't account for the difference and I can't put mine beside a Hydis until next week, but the description you give doesn't seem to fit this screen. In fact, your description of the Hydis sounds a lot like the display that I'm looking at except that the backlight is visible at the top rather than the bottom.

To the folks asking for pictures: is there really a point? You'll be rendering it on your screen so you won't get any idea what it looks like. It's also not possible to place two screens in one shot parallel to the plane of the camera so there will be some focus and lighting issues in any comparison shot.

Good shots, but the UXGA screen is the T42 IDTech which Dimitri says is yellower and colors duller than the T60p IDTech. The LG SXGA+ is gorgeous as usual in those shots.

I would dearly love to see a comparison between the new IDTech UXGA, the Boe-Hydis UXGA, and the LG SXGA+.

I am a little confused by some of your comparison. Please do the comparison for viewing both screens straight-on. How does the color/contrast(blacks) compare then?

PLEASE take a pic of the screens, straight on... just one! use the autumn wallpaper. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

Id tech is not duller, but to me, Hydis has richer picture/colors.

So far I am. I did the reinstall and am now in the middle of updates.

Once I get the XP and Thinkadvantage updates done I'll put in my extra stick of ram and start on Visual Studio.Net, Lightroom and the rest of my app.
