Just ordered Z61p or z61m??

#1 Post by XiP » Sat Apr 14, 2007 11:33 am

I just ordered a Z61p through the stockholder purchase program and got a ~$350 discount. My question is, why does it show up as Z61m in the order confirmation? Also what do you guys think of my purchase, I'll be using it for 3d modeling and photoshop. Was really torn between this and the T60p but I liked WUXGA more.

There is no CTO model in Z61p series. Perhaps you ordered a Z61m.

Apparently Z61m 9450-CTO only comes custom built according to lenovo's website.
Product: ThinkPad Z61m 9450-CTO [change]

Operating system: All [change]

Original description: ThinkPad Z61m Configure-to-Order system
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

This was the same case when I order my Z61p. In fact, I didn't place the order online because I noticed that whenever I added a Z61p to my cart it would stay that way until I went to the order summary screen and then it would be changed to a z61m.

So, I cancelled the on-line order and placed it over the phone. When I got the order summary, it again showed a z61m. So, I called again. I was told it was indeed a z61p, and they were not sure why is was showing a z61m.

More importantly the configuration that was shown was that of a z61p (and included options that were not available in the z61m -- WUXGA and FireGL for two things).

Bottom line, when I got the machine it was labled (and it is) a z61p. But, all of my receipts and order summaries show a z61m. But, the model number and serial number are shown correctly.

BTW, my model number is a 9450-G9U

this gave it away => 9450CTO ThinkPad Z61m Series Entry
9540 is the machine type number for Z61m and CTO means it's custom built

basically, you're getting a z61m with the insides/lcd of a z61p. looks like your option has 2gigs of ram as well.

thanks

Thanks for the clarifications guys. I have a couple more questions:
Does your Z61p have a webcam and media reader? I think I read somewhere that the Z61p doesn't have those.

Also how does the 15.4"WUXGA screen compare to 15" UXGA IPS? Core 2 Duo vs Core Duo? I was going to order the T60p that's in the Lenovo Outlet because it was about $1600 but then I saw that it had a Core Duo T2500 CPU. I use to have an A31p and I loved the 15" IPS screen on it. I sure hope my z61p's screen is comparable to that

The Z61p does not have a webcam, but it does have a media reader.

On my Z61p I have the LG WUXGA panel. My wife owns a T60p T2500 with UXGA IPS. The IPS is definitely better then the LG panel. But, I really don't have a problem the with the LG panel.

As far as the difference between CPUs most sites say the Core2Duo has about a 10% performance gain on a similarly clock CoreDuo. But, both systems are plenty fast. The 64bit instruction set is limited in its usefullness right now because the support for 64bit OSes is pretty bad.

However, I do personally like the Core2Duo as various projects I am involved in it is a benefit to run a 64bit OS and writing 64bit code (I use Fedora Core 6 x86_64).

Overall, I am very happy withe Z61p, and if I had to choose between the T60p and Z61p, I would still choose the z61p.

9450

The 9450 is a Z61m mainboard... Although the screen and features may be a Z61p, it is the EXACT same planar board as in the Z61m series....

I would cancel the order and go with a T-Series... You will be much better off... I have a 9450 and it has caused me nothing but grief...
