Lenovo Vista Upgrade DVD Question?
Lenovo Vista Upgrade DVD Question?
Hello,
I just received my Lenovo vista upgrade DVD in the mail.
Is this DVD a real windows image as found on the retail copy? Or is this a pre-installed image for my thinkpad?
Also, how can i replace my thinkvantage recovery image of windows xp with vista?
My goal for now would be to keep my windows XP and dual boot vista on the side.
Thanks.

No, it is intended to be used on a existing XP system and hence not the same as the retail DVDs.Is this DVD a real windows image as found on the retail copy?
Yes, http://apcmag.com/node/3834, however it wont install any of the pre-loaded softwares from Lenovo/IBM that came with your XP system.Or is this a pre-installed image for my thinkpad?
That is possible to do with your upgrade DVD.My goal for now would be to keep my windows XP and dual boot vista on the side.
Z61p - 9452 JRU, XP pro 32-bit, 15.4 WUXGA, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 160GB-54k HDD, 2GB-RAM, 256MB-VRAM, Intel ABG Pro, Bluetooth, DVD Multi Burn.
It's amazing how much misinformation is passed along.
The Vista upgrade dvd from Moduslink is a standard Vista install dvd and can be used to install any Vista 32 bit version except Enterprise provided you have a valid cd key. The cd key that comes with the upgrade dvd can install the business version as a fresh install or as an upgrade technically on any pc but is legal only on the pc it was ordered as an upgrade for. A previously installed version of XP or an XP install cd is not required. No pc specific drivers are included on the dvd. There is no provision for an R&R partition as the vista upgrade dvd is not a Lenovo recovery DVD.
Note also that if you happen to have a Vista 64 bit install DVD the cd key that came with the Moduslink upgrade will work with it.
Setting up a dual boot with Vista and XP should not be a problem. Be aware that system restore info will be wiped from the vista partition everytime XP is booted.

I receive this "Windows Anytime Upgrade" DVD together with my x60t purchase recently. Because I repartitioned my harddrive to install other OSes, I want to do a fresh Vista installation from scratch. But it wouldn't let me.steveg47 wrote: The Vista upgrade dvd from Moduslink is a standard Vista install dvd and can be used to install any Vista 32 bit version except Enterprise provided you have a valid cd key.
After I entered the CD-key, it went to the "Upgrade" or "Custom" installation page, because there is no present Windows system on my disk, the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. So I chose "Custom", and then it shows 3 disk partitions, and partition 1 is NTFS. But when I click "next", it says "Windows is unable to find a system volume to meet its installation criteria" or something like that. What could be wrong here?
I tried to erase the first partition and re-create one using the advanced tools at that page, but it still gives the same error. Does anybody know why? Do I have to install XP first then use this DVD to upgrade?
I mean, if it is really an "Upgrade Only" DVD, then at least it should say so.
Ok, kind of self-answering... a bit google search helps, it was because I missed the these two settings: 1) the partition must be set bootable; 2) the HD must be the first in the BIOS startup sequence.alanine wrote:

Problem solved, and I'm typing away in Vista already
