x31 software setup
Hey everyone,
I was wondering what the best software utility setup is for my x31. There are some options, mainly battery maximser vs NHC and Intel PROset vs Access connections. Those are the main two that come to mind. What are all your setups? Anyone running Openoffice or Thunderbird instead of their Microsoft counterparts?
Yeah, this can go on and on. Thought it might be a good discussion.
thanks!

openoffice and Thunderbird...
Hi Fudgy,
I only got my x31 a few weeks ago, but I am already liking it more than most of the laptops I have had before... Anyway...
For home use I have openoffice installed and don't find any problems generally speaking except on opening MS Office docs that have macros in them. Unfortunately we use a lot of macros at work so I tend to keep openoffice for personal use.
I have been using incarnations of Outlook (inc Express) for many years but i thought I would give Thunderbird a try on this laptop and so far I haven't got any complaint about it apart from I'm sure how to set up the spam setting properly (all my techrepublic mail gets detected as spam (grrr!)). But as far as the interface goes it is fine
And is just as easy to set up for mail accounts as outlook express.
Regards,
Dan

What's on mine?
NHC + .net FW 2 (A must)
Lenovo Access Connections (Better than using Windows ZeroConf)
Cisco VPN Client
Intel ProSet (For the 100VE NIC)
Blackberry Desktop Manager (Tethered Mode WWAN acess)
KazaaLite Codec pack + QuickTime Alternative + RealAlternative
(All 3 will cover roughly 99.999% of all media out there today)
Thinkpad Configuration (Kinda redundant but I like the look)
Lenovo Software Installer
Spybot S&D + SpywareBlaster (One-two knockout Combo against Spyware)
Mozilla Firefox + PuTTY + gVIM 7.0 + WinSCP (for Linux work)
A 1GByte USB key with [censored] Linux inside
Things to remove:
Trial software
Access IBM message center (Utterly useless)

I’m going to leave little snippets that id like all of your opinions on with this one
all IBM software installed except for access connections (installed a Atheros AR5001X MiniPCI) and as far as i know it doesn’t work with AC.
Whole office 2007 suite
adobe CS2 suite
studio mx suite
intel proset for 1000mt
ibm CSS integrated into IE7
firefox
toshiba virtual sound (enhances sound of media slice speakers)
AVG + lavasoft adaware
soundblaster audigy 2zs notebook w/ whole creative suite plus their media toolkit
soundforge 8
fallout tactics, system shock 2, ulead cool 3d,
nero 7.5.9.0
FL studio 4
powerDVD 7
ill edit if I’m leaving anything out
the hardware is
1.4 Pentium M
768 Mem (which will be up for sale as soon as i get 2 1gb sticks)
40gig hd (gonna get 7k 100gb)
Extended batt (need new extended one reg and one ultrabay)
dvd/cdrw (gunna go 4 dvd burner in X3 slice)
let me know what u guys think of both, its surprising really because i have owned a t20,600x,770z,360c,750c,a31,t41,t43p and now an x31 and I’m blown away how much I like this lil guy the t43p was close as far as a favorite goes but its not as well constructed as a x31, much more plastic creaky feel to it, thanks!

Um...Yes it does. You would have to migrate the AC profiles from the old card to the new (I switched from the AIR350 to the Atheros myself), but it most certainly works. In fact, I use it religiously in my machine when I travel overseas.det922 wrote:I’m going to leave little snippets that id like all of your opinions on with this one

Yeah, the X31 is a miracle worker - I just had its warranty extended for 2 more years. Brand new machines do not have its stability or its great keyboard...Nor its good general performance even in OSX/86.

From factory settings I installed the new Lenovo update program and let it do its thing with the new drivers and programs.
Active Virus Shield - Antivirus.
IE7 - browser with tabs.
FFdShow - for watching movies.
Quicktime Alt - for watching HD movie trailers.
NHC - Underclocking the CPU by 0.2v on each stage.
Still plenty of things to install.
