T43p question
T43p question
Do any of the T43P machines out there have 256MB of VRAM?
I am considering either upgrading the CPU in my T41P to 2.16GHz or getting a T43p.
The other option I am considering is a HD upgrade. I am looking for something that is 120GB+, runs at 7200RPM and will work without any BIOS hackery. Does such a beast exist?
I really love my T41P and would really like to max it out. I don't mind investing a couple of hundred dollars, so long as I see a good enough return on my investment to extend the life of the machine by a couple more years.

All T43p's have FireGL V3200 with 128MB of RAM. It should be faster than your FireGL T2, but not by too much.
Your HD is already 7200RPM, right? A bigger HD won't be faster. Do you really need the size?
Upgrading the CPU from 1.7GHz to 2.1GHz, which is the highest you can go without hacking/swapping boards will yield the biggest difference in performance.

No, that is still 128 MB.
When ATI introduced their PCI-E series of dedicated laptop GPUs they also introduced Hypermemory. The deal is that you can use your system memory if the onboard VRAM is too little. Due to hardware limitations i'd guess, hypermemory is always the same amount of VRAM, just that it is system memory, for example:
an x300 has 64 MB of onboard memory, but can use 128 MB including the memory hypermemory allows, that is 64 MB VRAM + 64 MB system ram.
A major drawback is the much higher latency of system memory along with a lower bandwidth.

Well then I guess that answers that. I was thinking about that T43P because it appeared to have 256MB of dedicated VRAM. I dislike hypermemory, integrated video, whatever you want to call it. So I guess my T41P is superior because I don't have to worry about that 2010 error.

No, I haven't checked it out. I don't have the money to try. Of course I could just look it up in the tawbook if I was so inclined.
