R40 CPU Upgrade
I've been reading the fourms, and would like to upgrade from my Pentium M 1.4 to 1.7 ... How do I find out what processor I have, ie Banias vs Dothan, and which one to purchase?
Thanks
Thanks

If you have a R40 with a Pentium-M, you most certainly have a Banias CPU and you will need to buy a faster Banias CPU since the R40 in any of its incarnations does not support the Dothan.

A Banias Pentium-M always has 1 MB of level-2 cache whereas a Dothan has 2 MB of level-2 cache. That's the best way to tell the two apart. Ask for the S-Spec code, which reads something like SL6FA which you can search for on Intel's web site and it will return technical details of the chip.
Make sure you're not looking at a celeron though - a celeron based on the Dothan core has 1 MB of level-2 cache.

You need a SL6N5, which is socket 478. SL6N9 is socket 479, which, I think, is the surface mount version of the 1.7 GHz Pentium-M which needs to be soldered in and therefore will not work with the R40.

I'm new at this, so please bear w/ me ..........
Running CPU-Z, it tells me that my current CPU :
Number of cores 1
Number of threads 1 (max 1)
Name Intel Pentium M
Codename Banias
Specification Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1400MHz
Package Socket 479 mPGA (platform ID = 5h)
CPUID 6.9.5
Extended CPUID 6.9
Brand ID 22
Core Stepping B1
Technology 0.13 um
So would I not need to have a 479? I hope u r right, cause I cannot find a SL6N9 ....... Is the N5 what u have upgraded yours to?

I'm pretty sure I have a SL6N5 - there are a couple on ebay for a lot more than what I paid for mine. I'm not surprised that you can't get a SL6N9 - most people would not be able to install a surface mount micro-BGA2 processor.
It is definitely a 478 pin package since the SL6N4 1.3 GHz Pentium-M that came out of my R40 is a 478.

You would most likely want to get some since the original stuff will be all hard and dry by now, if there is any between the CPU and the heatsink - mine had a small piece of foil and that was it.

I just recommend getting some, which is a lot better than none. I use cheap generic stuff. Others here will recommend more exotic materials, such as Arctic Silver or something like that. What it really comes down to is how much money you're willing to spend no thermal compound.
