New IBM X41 might be a few weeks away!!!

#1 Post by tyh » Sat Oct 02, 2004 1:51 pm

As I as looking through port replicators on the IBM website for one that's compatible with the X40 (not many are, in fact it's only the X4 that's compatible) I fell over this:

"Compatible with X20/21/22/23/24/30/31, T20/21/22/23/30/40/41/42, R30/31/32/40/50/50p/51, and A20/21/21e/22/22e/30/31 (Does not support X40/41, R40e/50e, or G40)"

http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... &storeId=1

Does this mean that the X41's finally on it's way?

Please, if anyone knows anything. I'm on the brink of ordering the X40, so if anyone knows more about the X41 release date, please please tell. :D

Do you guys intend on selling yours and waiting for the X41? Or just living with it?

Well i think its a premature to sell the X40, just yet... One would have to look that the specs for the new X41 and see what improvements they have made.

OK, I've got one for you.

It has a 60 GB hard drive.

Now I do NOT know this at all, but this would be an obvious upgrade.

For those of us with an x40, it might mean a 60 GB upgrade might be available.

If it isn't the hard drive, then I can't figure out what it would be ... maybe smaller? Lighter?

What about the Dothan processor. To my knowledge, the current processors are Banias. Are we going to see the Dothan processor in the X41?

Maybe Dothan

#12 Post by tyh » Mon Oct 04, 2004 2:08 am

I would guess that the Dothan upgrade can be expected, as both the LV 1.4 and ULV 1.1 models are out from Intel.

Don't know about the 60gig disk, as it's not yet on the market. But hopefully 8)
Other improvements could be firewire support and maybe (!) better graphics.

On the other hand, also heard that IBM will wait the X4x update until the new Sonoma platform is released from Intel, expected Q1 '05. Here we're talking about faster bus and PCI-Express support, plus a few multimedia enhances such as multichannel surround.

Buttom line, I think I'm still going to go for the X40, as it's pretty much all I need. Could wish for better graphics (but no playing games on 12" anyways), bigger HDD and 2MB cache. But I guess a 250gig external hdd (for home use), a 2.5" 80gig (for the road) and a Freecom or Lacie slim DVD burner could do the trick. And oh, plus 1gig or 1.5gigs of ram.

By the way, will I be able to feel big difference between 1gig and 1.5gigs of RAM?

This is unless someone can convince me to wait for the X41. ANYONE?
What about the IBM guys that hang around in here? Any news from your front?

I'm currently typing on a brand spankin' new X40 as we speak. I wouldn't bother waiting - you just get caught up in the never-ending game of "the next model around the corner will be a little faster." I upgraded the base memory in this from 256 to 768 and it cruises along just fine.

What really impresses me is the build quality of this machine. Definately a sturdy machine. I got it for my little sister who is growing up and now off to college. I figured it would be a good opportunity to compare this against my T30 to see if I want to make the jump. I really like this X40, and I mean REALLY LIKE, but, I guess I'm also very happy with my T30, and I'm thinking about saving my money until IBM comes out with something in tablet form...

I just hope whoever designs an IBM tablet (should one ever be made), it's the same person(s) who designed the X40 - not the people who worked on the T4x series - this X is many times better.

The following upgrades comes to mind

1. better LCD screen (the X40 would be perfect for watching divx movies on the road if not for the screen. If the LCD screen is as good as the Sony Laptop, then the X41 will be the best ultraportable in the market)
2. Firewire AND SD card (all formats)
3. get rid of the propriety powered USB and replace with normal USB (or a normal size powered USB is good enough)
4. upgrade of CPU (Obviously!). However if the laptop gets too hot (due to the extra heat from the fater CPU) to place on the lap, then the cpu upgrade may not be that great for the casual users. Right now the heat is just nice.
5. change the LED light to white. Stupid yellow LED is not bright enough.
6. Limited edition all red or all blue or all green versions or the 3 colors in one version (just like the all white Macs, the all black is getting slightly boring). Or a more expensive all magnesium alloy version.
7. BLUETOOTH!!!!!
8.Others like better soundcard / better video is hopeful but doubtful.

Higher/better harddisk is not a real model upgrade as they can be easily upgraded in the older machines anytime. It is just a spec upgrade.

Beside that it is a perfect machine.

Also give us a proper X40/41 laptop bag instead of the generic all size fits laptop bag. I am sure most of us will pay a bit extra for a proper 'designed for X40/41' IBM laptop bag.

There are models of the X40 that already offer Bluetooth.

Anyone know how much the extra 1MB cache and .2GHz upgrade will boost performance?

Does Dothan Upgrade Mean No X41 soon?

#20 Post by PaulO » Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:38 am

I assumed that the major motivation for an X41 would be to add the Dothan 738 processor. If a Dothan-based 738 were coming out in a few weeks, why would IBM upgrade the X40 to Dothan? Wouldn't they be trying to get rid of the X40 inventory with discounts instead?

Morrow posted: no X41 until Q1-05 or later, depending upon intel & IBM..

What does that suggest the changes will be in the X41? Anything worth waiting for now that the X40 has Dothan?
