Help Identifying Atheros AR5212 in a T41? Drivers?

#1 Post by MintPad » Tue Apr 17, 2007 10:03 am

I run Linux on my ThinkPad, and I'm trying to install a Windows driver with the ndiswrapper utility, only I don't know the exact model of my card, nor do I know where to get the driver.

Based on my lspci output, I have an Atheros AR5212 abg NIC card. I bought the laptop used, but I'm fairly certain that IBM shipped it with this card as an upgrade over the Intel card.

Does anyone know the specifics on this? And, more importantly, where I can get a driver for it?

you dont need ndiswrapper. use the madwifi drivers (google em up) instead. i'm surprised thought that they arent automatically launched. which distro are you using? ubuntu has em, for example.

No, I want to use ndiswrapper. The Madwifi drivers (which come preinstalled with some distros, but also which I've manually installed before on Zenwalk) get poor reception. Using a genuine driver, in spite of its conflict with my preference for free software, will give me superior reception. If it doesn't, I'll go back to Madwifi. But it's bad when I'm in the middle of my coffee shop, hopping on the open network there, and have a hard time getting one bar of reception.

EDIT: I'm running Mint right now. Mepis and Ubuntu come with them preinstalled, and some in the MEPIS forums advised that I use a real driver over Madwifi if possible.

Problems with the Ubuntu Atheros drivers

#4 Post by umdenken » Wed May 02, 2007 1:47 am

I think I'm seeing the issues you're talking about - no matter what I do, I get a reported 50% signal strength, or less. And the signal is frequently dropped.

It's not clear to me which drivers are use, though...

Take that card out, and publish here whatever numbers etc. you can find on that card (no need for the MAC number).
One source for Atheros drivers is www.sparklan.com

For Linux you should rather try the Suse drivers from madwifi
http://madwifi.org/suse/10.3/i386/
They work on other T41s with the IBM Atheros a/b/g

Ok - I'll take it out and take a look... I was thinking that I'd look for a used Intel card to just not have to worry about this...
