What Windows Services does System Update 3 require?

#1 Post by taob » Wed Apr 18, 2007 7:45 pm

The other day, I decided to trim down my Vista installation a bit, and disabled 49 of the 152 services listed in the Service MMC snap-in. Based on my experiences with XP and research into Vista, these are services that are not strictly needed (Parental Controls, Peer Name Resolution Protocol, Tablet PC Input Service, etc., etc.).

Well, apparently one or more of those services is required by SU, because it crashes while it tries to download the update package. I verified this by re-enabling the 49 servers, and SU started working fine again.

Here are the services I disabled. Before I start narrowing down the list, does anyone already know which services SU requires? Or at least a way to check which services are needed? I poked around in Vista's event log and didn't find anything useful.

(Disclaimer: I don't yet have a thinkpad, so I'm essentially taking WAGs here)

SU likely needs to access your registry and/or file system. One at a time, try starting each of the following services until SU works again...

Portable Device Enumerator Service
Remote Registry
Shell Hardware Detection
WebClient

If none of those does it, then you'll just have to have the service manager open in one window, and start services one at a time, each time trying SU, until it works...

Normally when I install a fresh copy of Windows I disable the Server service, as well as a few others. System Update 3 wouldn't work until I re-enabled it.

I was having the same problems described in this thread:

I also tried uninstalling and re-installing .Net but it was the Server service that did it for me. Pity.
