Advice needed for T21

#1 Post by gb » Sun Oct 03, 2004 2:10 pm

Hi,

I have "inherited" T21 2647-47u. Laptop looks great. I have installed 64M ram but it doesn't boot and has black screen. Just making some beeps. I have tried to hook up to external monitor, but no difference. cpu fan is running and status lights are glowing.

Need your advice to identify the problem before I start taking thing apart.
thanks

Are you POSITIVE that the memory you've installed is PC100 Lo-Density?

I've seen this exact same response on the T2X series when the wrong density memory is installed.

Are the BEEPs:
1) One long and two short beeps.
2) Two short beeps.
3) Three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep.

The memory is for sure Micron PC100 64MB CL2.
type: MT4LSDT864LHG-10EB1
I have pulled the stick from another working laptop (A20M)

In terms of beeps:

it is actually none of the above, when I push power switch on it gives 4 consecutive beeps.
thanks for your help!

GB,

Welcome to the dead T21 club. Tyr ebay--there are at least two or three vendors offering the t21 system board, including the two listed below:

http://stores.ebay.com/Art-Of-Laptops

and

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQgotopageZ1Q ... propertyZ1

Hopefully, you will find one that works for you.

Do I need to buy specific model of mobo to match my existing one? And how complicated the task of swapping system board?

GB,

This might be an opportune time to consider "upgrading" your machine by switching the entire lower unit for one from a T22.

It would only be necessary to take the display off your T21 and install it on the new lower unit, a much easier job than a MB changeout. All of the memory, HDs, Ultrabay drives, accessories, etc. are usable in the T22.

If you were willing to buy new PC133 memory, you could even swap the display and all of your accessories onto a T23 lower unit.

WRT instructions, see: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US, the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the T2X series Thinkpads.
