Questions about IBM Transnote (will be also updated)

#1 Post by sloomy » Sun Oct 03, 2004 3:03 pm

These Questions Topic will be updated, if i'll have new quesions.

- Transnote has a mini PCI slot, can i also intsall there a W-Lan card ? What do i need to use that ability ?

- A Transnote with that error message : "175 CRC1 ". What does that mean ? Is it repariable ? If yes, how ?

- Can I use newer Harddrives , like the ones with 7200 rpm ? and higher capacities as 80 gb or more ?

Thanks for any answer and idea

The mini-PCI slot presently contains the combination modem/NIC for the system. If you wanted to replace it with a WiFi NIC you'd have to figure out some way to install antennae for it and decide which function you'd be willing to give up as there are no Ethernet/Modem/WiFi cards available.

Usually means that the motherboard is bad, or at the very least the internal DC/DC card is bad.

Yes, I have had a 7K60 HD in mine and presently it has a 5K40 in it.

The EEPROM on the Transnote's system board has been corrupted.

Yes and no. The simple fact that you ask this question shows me that you do not belong to the small group of people who can do it. The only thing you could do on your own is change the whole main board.

There are a few guys out there, however, who can restore the contents of the EEPROM. You're located in Germany, aiight? Try and contact Przemyslaw Glowacki, the web master of "Thinkpad-Portal.de"...

http://www.homep.de/modules.php?op=modl ... d=5&page=1

...and ask him if he can help you, he ordinarily offers this kind of service.

Only if you have very, very (I repeat, for the sake of clarity: VERY) good soldering skills (which most probably you DO NOT HAVE), you can also contact "Joe in Australia":

Yes, you can.

And I'd like to add that some folks are quite happy with their compact flash WLAN-cards (only applies to the right-hand models, though, see bottom of the page):

The TransNote HMM doesn't list a separate DC/DC card.

Yes, change the CMOS battery.

If you continue to use the slowly dying battery (accum) pretty soon your unit will cease to BOOT.

Not possible, the video card and it's memory is integrated into the MB.

While it may be possible to put RAM chips with more memory in your machine, it is likely that the circuit board will not support those chips. They'd need more address lines.

The video controller would also have to know about and support that RAM. Since you don't have the source for your video chip's firmware, I suggest you give up... or get a job at IBM or the video chip maker so you can get the specs.

Hmmmm. I wonder if IBM ThinkPad engineers tweak the bejeebus out of their machines... and if they ever sell them.

Why? Doesn't really make sense. You won't be able to play any decent 3D game with such a video chip, anyway, whether it has just 4 or 8 MB of RAM.

Actually it is technically possible (but it's not very practical). The ATI RAGE MOBILITY M video chip in the Transnote has 4MB of internal memory and can support additional 4MB externally. But what are the benefits of doubling the memory to a meager 8MB? It wouldn't be worth the trouble, after all.

It is possible to put in a wireless mini-PCI but the problem is the antenna. Normally, a laptop with build in wireless will include an antenna all the way around the LCD for best reception. Unless you want to try putting in an anteanna, it is not going to work too well. Furthermore, I haven't been able to find a mini-PCI with wireless/wired network + modem. If you actually put in a wireless-PCI, you'll have to sacrafice the network or modem function on your transnote.

I strongly suggest using a wireless CF instead. Probably cheaper too.
