BSOD when entering Rescue & Recovery

#1 Post by delfs » Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:28 pm

Hi all

I desperately need to restore my T41 to factory settings, starting from scratch with a clean XP install.
When trying to enter Rescue and Recovery by pressing blue "Access IBM" button during startup, I get a "c000021a (fatal system error)" BSOD. (I can still boot up windows normally, but it kinda hangs for 10 mins after startup, and Windows is quite messed generally)
The only thing I can think of that could've messed things up, is that I once ran a Ubuntu Live cd...

Is the MBR messed up? Or what has happened?
I found the Recovery repair diskette (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 54483.html) but the machine doesn't have a floppy drive...

I'm lost - what to do?
It's kinda urgent as I have to work quite intensively on some exam projects from next week.

Any input is welcome - thanks in advance!

Regards, Jonas

If you can get hold of a usb floppy, try booting from it.

If somebody in this forum downloaded the iso files which used to be on the site and sends you them, it might help if you can't get a usb floppy.

BUT, if windows is taking 10 mins to boot - either windows is really messy, or your hdd has a big problem - get all important files onto cd/dvd as soon as the day before yesterday, then worry about the installation.

delfs: If you can get into Windows then there is no need for using the blue button during startup. Try using the blue button once in Windows. If it doesn't work, run the IBM Rescue and Recovery .exe wherever you find it, perhaps in c:\program files\ibm\. This program can restore your T41 to factory state (which is not quite a clean XP install). If you can't find it, then try reinstalling it from c:\ibmtools\apps\ibmrnr.

I don't think I know anyone who own one...

What ISOs is that?

It boots quite quickly, but often "hangs" for 10 mins _after_ startup.

Nothing happens when I press the blue button after startup, I can't find "IBM Rescue and Recovery .exe" (or anything like it) and there's no 'ibmrnr' in c:/ibmtools/apps... :/ Is it possible to find this program anywhere else?

You could buy an external USB floppy drive from Lenovo, then use the RnR repair diskette, but there is no guarantee this will work in the end. Lenovo used to have the .iso file for making a bootable CD of this on their website, but it is no longer there. If someone happened to save the .iso on their hard drive, they could send it to you.

Your other options are to order the Recovery CD's from Lenovo, or use an OEM XP Windows install CD to install XP back onto your ThinkPad. You can use the product key on the bottom of the ThinkPad with an OEM version of XP (however, this will not work with a retail version of XP).

The Rescue and Recovery application can be started in Windows by running the rnr_gui.exe

I can't seem to find it - where is it supposed to be located?

I got IBM Support to send me Recovery cds, but i'll take up to 10 days before I'm actually going to receive them...

Any help appreciated!

Best regards, Jonas

It should be in the Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery folder.

It might be rrpcgui.exe in the C:\Program Files\IBM\IBM Rapid Restore Ultra\ directory. This launches the Rapid Restore Ultra backup and restore program.

The T41 would not have the "Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery folder" unless Rescue and Recovery was updated.
