ThinkPad Newbie - A Couple Questions

#1 Post by MrBrian » Sun Oct 03, 2004 5:32 pm

Greetings,

Just made a very good buy on an IBM ThinkPad T20. What a great laptop! I am extremely pleased!

Of course, I'm new to this computer, but I'm also relatively new to the whole laptop experience (always owned desktop systems). As such, I've a few questions which I haven't been able to find via searching around the net.

1. I've found the list of the Fn key combinations after downloading the Hardware Manual and User Guide (didn't know there was a little light at the top of the display which illuminates the keyboard...COOL!). Anyway, I noticed that there were several Fn combinations which were listed as "Reserved". What does this mean? Is it possible to set up my own Fn key combinations? What I'd really like to have is a combination which would perform the same function as the "Back" button in my browser. Maybe, it might be possible to set up one of the Trackpoint buttons to perform this function?

2. What exactly is this "Driver Matrix" I've seen mentioned numerous times in these forums (and on IBM's site)?

3. What is the "ThinkPad" button in the upper left corner of the keyboard (next to the escape key) for?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

1. Alt Left arrow is Back. Alt right arrow key is Foward.

2. Driver matrix is a one stop web page where you can download all drivers for a particular thinkpad model. For T2x:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4JSQHB

3. Hitting that during bootup can get you to rapid restore or BIOS.

Brian, it is the BIOS & driver updates site for each ThinkPad model.
Checkout:
