number lock key turned on in the begining of Windows
How do I turn off the number lock funtion on my Thinkpad T42.
Everytime I bootup my laptop and into Windows to type in my password the number lock key function has been turned on and I have to turn it off each time by hitting shift numlk key at the same time. I disabled it on the thinkpad bios but the same thing happens number lock is still turned on automatically everytime I bootup my laptop. OS being used is WIndows XP pro

Have you tried booting up off of a CD or into Rescue and Recovery to see if the same behavior is present? If it is not, then there is probably some Windows program or driver causing your problem. I am not sure how you would find it though.
Try booting up the PC Doctor for DOS CD and running diagnostics.

Do you have by any chance have a docking station with external keyboard PS2 or even an USB keyboard? If so, your num lock behavior could be controlled by the docked profile, many thanks to Windows.

I had a similar situation when I had an external keyboard, pressed the "NUMLOCK" with the external keyboard, then took my notebook computer elsewhere to work (without the external keyboard).
Here's what I did to disable the NUMLOCK:
Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Accessability
and start the "On-Screen-Keyboard" program.
Use this program to press the "NUMLOCK" with your Mouse, and this will disable NUMLOCK, enabling you to use your notebook computer's keyboard properly again.
Good luck!

In my experience this should work.etherburn wrote:should I just turn off the number lock on the external keyboard and then restart the laptop. If that does not work how do I get to the docking station profile
