T30 LCD Replacement

#1 Post by sbelew » Sun Apr 22, 2007 9:25 pm

Just aquired a T30 very cheap. Runs perfectly, (already installed Linux on it) but it has no display. Ive been doing a lot of reading here, Lenovo.com and other places trying to determine which LCD screen I need. It is the model 2366-DU9, which from what I've been able to gather from Lenovo website, is based on the 2366-81U. The inverter is P/N 26P8408, FRU 26P8419 which is a 150 nit inverter. I think ive narrowed it down to one of these 4 screens, the 11P8272 and 11P8222 which are both 200 nit, or the 11P8293 and 11P8294 which are 150 nit screens. Can anybody confirm this for me?
Also if I were to obtain a complete T30 top, screen, hinges, inverter, cable, wireless antennas and cover. would any one from a T30 work? I have seen a few on eBay which are the complete top assemblies. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.
I've already learned a great deal about my new T30 toy from this website, I have the memory problem, which i was able to fix with the folded up paper under the cover. But since I also learned that with a BIOS upgrade, I could put a 1 gig memory in the back slot, its really not an issue for me since i only want to run 1 gig for Linux.
I also have a T23 which I came across for free, and after replacing the, screen and keyboard, I have a great running little t23. Ive since added a 7200 rpm hard drive, a internal atheros wireless card and a DVD/CD-RW.

Welcome aboard the ThinkPad forum.

If you get the whole lid with LCD and LCD-cable, you can use any T30 version.
Only thing to look out for is the resolution. Most are XGA 1024x768, some have SXGA+ at 1400x1050.
As long as you have an LCD with matching LCD-cable and inverter, you're fine.
The SXGA+ are dearer obviously.
If you have not done so yet, DL the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your T30 from IBM/Lenovo. It has all the instructions incl. pictures.

PS: describe your TPs in your signature (in the 'Profile' section) like in mine. Makes it easier for future questions.

I added my Signature Line, hope it looks good. Great news on replacing the entire top, I would still like to find just a replacement LCD panel, as it would save me a little money, possibly. I still want to get a CD-RW/DVD, a wireless card, and a new battery, but I dont want to end up with a pile of money in the thing. So if anyone knows which LCD panel I need, i would greatly appreciate it. Is there any way to identify the type of cable that I have to determine which panel I would need?

The IBM/Lenovo describes your TP as follows:
Product: ThinkPad T30 2366-DU9 [change]
Operating system: Windows XP [change]

Original description: Based on 2366-81U: P4-M 1.8GHz (512KB), 256MB RAM, 40.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8X4X32X8X CD-RW/DVD-ROM, Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
You should have the DVD/CDRW already and you need an XGA LCD.
That could be either 150 or 200 nit. The part numbers from your first post were correct.
There are also T30 LCD-screens made by Hitachi, which are not in the manual. They are just as good.
Right now there's a refurbished sealed unit on eBay, would suit perfectly.
IBM T30 Color LCD Display /Panel XGA 14.1" FRU#11P8294, *FACTORY SEALED* Samsung Screen (LTN141XE-L01) Item number: 190103530295
Try to stay under $100.-
You could take the risk with this one:
IBM Thinkpad T30 laptop LCD screen, Item number: 170105153675

Search eBay with "IBM T30 LCD".

Before you buy just the LCD, check that your lid is prewired for WiFi. When you open the laptop, look on the top-side of the lid. There should be some 'ribbed' plastic piece on each side. When you open the Modem-lid at the bottom, you should see two cables that will fit onto the wifi-card.
If any of those are missing, buy a wifi-enabled lid-assembly instead.

Im actually waiting to bid on the first one you mentioned. Been looking at it for a few days. I dont have the DVD/CDRW or the wireless card, but it does have the wireless antennas in the lid. It was a basket case laptop, scavenged for parts, but it does run quite well. I just stuck the CD in it for now to load software. Since I got it for an even trade of a 80gb hard drive, im not getting hurt on it at all. I am actually considering tricking it out to the max, with processor, memory, etc. It does have the memory slot problem which i think is why i got it for practically free. But the paper wedge trick has solved that, at least for now. Its something to keep me occupied. I did the same thing with the T23. Theres just something about these Thinkpads that really draw my attention, I can't figure it out.
