LF: small, cheap thinkpad (240x, x20)

#1 Post by schiesz » Mon Apr 23, 2007 10:28 am

Looking for a small, cheap thinkpad. 240x would be great, 240 if it was very cheap. x22-24 would be great as well, or x20-21 for a better price. I'm mainly looking for a web machine to carry around the house, since my wife has mostly taken over my T23, I need something to use. Missing parts is fine, as long as the price reflects it.

Thanks,

schiesz

Also consider a 570E. They have 500Mhz PIII, but their RAM capacity is a little less than some of the early X series. I will say good luck finding one with a working battery. Every single one I have come across here and on ebay all seem to have dead, or close to dead batteries.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

If this machine will be used mainly for surfing the web, then I strongly recommend against getting a 240 or 240X because their display resolution is limited to 800x600 (SVGA), making it painful to view most web sites. Some X2* models also only have SVGA, so avoid those as well.

Another thought. Since you'll be just carrying it around the house, perhaps it's okay if the machine is about the same weight as your T23 rather than ~3 lbs? I'm asking this because perhaps you can get a 600X or T20 with a DVD drive, enabling you to watch DVDs or play CDs, and also making it easier to install Windows.

I REALLY like the small size of the 240x. It would be much better if it was 1024x768 though. So I guess that puts me back into the x22-24 line...

I've had a 600E, T21, T22, T23 so I was wanting to try something new. But if the price is right, I could go with almost anything as long as its no bigger than a T2x.

Missing parts is definately ok with T2x as well, since I have a bunch of those around here anyway.

Every once in a while, I see an X40 selling for around $500 on eBay. The X40 is between the 240 and the X2* in size - - see these photos that I took.

Thanks for the compliment. All six laptops in that photo were sold last year. The Portege was sold for $540, including a slim USB CD drive.

I have a 570E that i could sell.
It's model 2644-6BU.
It has only 128 megs ram
No hard drive.(but the caddy and screws are there)
Has the ultra base with 24x cd rom and floppy.
Battery is there but dont hold any charge(well about 2 min's)
I have a 72W ac adapter to go with it.
System and screen is in great shape.

I'm in Canada so shipping might be a little more.Should be around $25.00 give or take a little.
I dont realy know what the 570E is worth thease days but i'm open to fair offers...

PM sent. Still looking for a small, cheap thinkpad.

pianowizard, that X40 looks perfect, but too much money for me right now. Going to have to stick to the x22 class or lower for now.

Location added.

Cheap is relative. A x24 for $200 is cheap, a 570E for $200 is not. This is just an example, and not any indication of prices I have been offered.

But to answer the question better, I have about $200 I can spend on this. I would love to get a 240x for under $100.

Well, I am not personally interested (for the reasons we discussed in PM), but I would think you could get $90-100 out of that machine, probably $120 if you found some old HD to put in it.

Just a month or two ago, a forum member sold several 570E's in excellent condition for about $100 shipped each, and several units with a loose display hinge for something like $50 shipped each.

Here is another option, because you asked...

I have an X23 (866MHz with XP Pro COA) that I was considering selling. It has internal wifi, which I upgraded to Broadcom B/G. The internal Ethernet still works via the CDC. I also have an XJack PC Card modem for it, since the combo modem/wifi was removed for the Broadcom. Operationally, it is perfect with 384MB RAM and a 30GB drive (which is newer). The screen has no bad/stuck pixels. Every slot and port works properly. As you know, the Pentium-IIIm-based X22, X23 & X24's are surprisingly quick.

I'd call the cosmetic condition very good. The machine has been used regularly, the corners of the cover show wear and the keyboard is slightly shiney, but works perfectly. Mouse controls all work perfectly. The LCD looks fine but I can see one very faint, small (smaller than a dime) white spot in the upper left quadrant and if you hold the screen at an angle while it's off, you can see a faint scratch in the lower right quandrant. You can faintly see the white spot when a white or light background is up - you can never see the scratch.

I can post some pictures. In summary, it's a perfectly equipped X23 with XP Pro, internal wifi, the right amount of memory, and it works perfectly. Cosmetically, it's not mint, but it looks very good overall. It comes with an AC adapter, but no Ultrabase or CD. Any USB CD-ROM or DVD drive works as a boot device. It is preloaded with a fresh XP load and all IBM updates. The battery is in the green zone with just under half of the rated life available - about an hour and a half of use. I replaced one hinge and the LCD is now tight. Bezels are in great shape.

I was thinking $275 delivered would be fair, but not many like this have sold. Let me know what you think. You won't be disappointed with this one. (It's $75 more than your mentioned budget, but it does have internal G wifi and an XP COA.)

Underclocker is an honest and reputable seller. I'm typing right now on the X40 he sold me just the other week, for a very fair price.

I got the X23 from Underclocker a few days ago, and it is very nice. I'm having some trouble getting the wireless to work in Ubuntu, but everything is great in XP. Sticking with XP for now.

Thanks for the assistance with finding a good, small machine for me!
