Interesting article in ECN about lithium-ion batteries

#1 Post by rkawakami » Mon Apr 23, 2007 2:20 pm

An article in this month's Electronic Component News (ECN) magazine about lithium-ion batteries is interesting (at least to me). Probably somewhat on the technical side, but it gives a little insight about the use of Li-Ion cells and how the electronics inside the pack are supposed to work.

Be sure to check out the sidebar article, Charge Batteries with Care.

Unfortunately both links throw up errors in Firefox and IE:

Whatever you were trying to do, it didn't work out the way you expected.
You could go back and try again, or perhaps return to the Home Page.

Well, I am able to access the links perfectly.

Thanks for such an interesting article, Ray.

I did get the same errors when I first tried to access the sidebar stories. After a couple of minutes I tried again and got connected. Probably a problem with ECN server. Give it a try again.

Thanks for the article Ray. It's the best one I have read on the subject. I found the following especially intriguing.
Ecnmag.com wrote:<snip> Smart batteries can provide warranty and pack-abuse information, too.

The TI chip (and others) incorporates a security feature that employs the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1) that ensures the authenticity of an attached battery pack. According to Tichy, after-market lithium-ion batteries cause the biggest problem in the industry. So, assemblers may put a security function in their packs so users can determine they have an authentic rather than a counterfeit pack in their equipment.
The second link you posted led me to the wrong page. I found the link for "Charge Batteries with Care" at: http://www.ecnmag.com/article.aspx?id=139903
