CTRL ALT Delete stopped working.

#1 Post by mikesugar » Mon Apr 23, 2007 9:50 pm

Hi,

My CTRL-ALT-DEL recently stopped bringing up the "Lock, Log off, Shut down .. " dialog and now goes straight to the task manager.

Can anyone tell me how to bring back the dialog?

Thanks.

Could it be that the Welcome Screen became enabled somehow? (in Control Panel > Users > change the way users log on)

Nope.

Thanks dr_st, but that's not it.

The welcome screen still shows. The problem happens during use after I've already logged in. I usually hit ctrl alt delete to bring up the dialog to lock the computer, log off, or display the task manager.

But now it goes straight to task manager instead of showing the dialog.

What OS are you using, WinNT, Win2K or WinXP?

Running Windows XP Pro that came with 87414BU (minus the google and other junk).

I guess the technical name for the dialog that went mssing is the "Windows Security" dialog, according to some other research i did. It used to come up on the thinkpad, and it still does on my dell desktop.

The point is that the welcome screen should be disabled, or so I understood.

Click on Start/Run and type in: taskmgr and hit Enter.
Does that bring it up?

Have you spilt anything on your keyboard?
Do those keys work in another combination and/or by themselves?
e.g. Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, (copy and paste), Del deletes a character in a text.
Can't think of an Alt+something right now.

Found on http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_wel_screen.htm:
Using CTRL+ALT+DEL Key Combination Opens Task Manager

When you use the keyboard combination CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows Security window, Task Manager is opened instead. This issue occurs if you configured Microsoft Windows XP to use the Welcome screen.

To resolve this issue, disable the Welcome screen. To do this, follow these steps:

1. In Control Panel, click User Accounts.

2. Click "Change the way users log on or off".

3. Click to clear the "Use the welcome screen for fast and easy logon" check box.

4. Click OK.

NOTE: The "Fast User Switching" option is disabled if the Welcome screen is disabled.

Most of the options that are available on the Windows Security window, including the "Locking the computer" option, can be selected on the Shut Down menu in Task Manager. You can also lock the computer by using the Windows logo key+L keyboard combination.

Could you please tell me which suggestion worked, as there were several mentioned above. I also go right to the task mgr when I press that combo and I would love the other multiple choice screen you wanted. I also am on Windows XP Pro
thanks

Hi Purcy, it's the Quote that does it.
The first suggestions were just tests to see if those keys worked in the first place.
