Help-Virus protection messed me up? Plus looooong boot time

Hello,

(My apologies if this is the wrong forum - please redirect me if needed...)

Computer info: T43 from Aug '05.

I'm appealing to the cumulative wisdom and experience here: After installing McAfee ViruScan v8.5 (8.0 was happily working prior to that), I noticed that:
(1) the blue "Access IBM" no longer works (it does nothing now)
(2) the volume control buttons no longer give the on-screen feedback display of the volume level or muting
(3) the touchpad refuses to retain my setting of "no tapping": I uncheck the "Enable tapping" in the control panel, but next time the computer "wakes up" or reboots - it goes back to being enabled.

Before I go the long route of uninstalling ViruScan, seeing if things go back to normal etc., I am hoping to learn from you that "Oh, yes, I know about that problem, and the solution is..."

Another issue that I have, is a VERY long startup duration (not always). This is, by the way, something unrelated to the ViruScan new installation. Is there some way or tool that will allow me to log during startup all the processes with the time/duration it took each one to come up?
