Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Hello,
i´ve tried to install Win to CF about few days now. Ended up at the ntldr error. Came up to this forum, tried Grub4dos.
Everything is OK, till a try to boot. Either I get the blinking cursor or end up with Try hd0,0 NTFS 5:
and nothing happens. Have left it for minutes (read somewhere that someone had to wait for 1 minute to get it work, when seeing this text) and nothing happens.
As I have one already working solutions in my hand I hoped that I can clone one. Used ghost32 (made image with boot, option 4.) and found my-self with error "a disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to restart"
Can someone please explain to me what I´m doing wrong?
And for grubinst:
I execute grupinst to CF that contains winXP insallation, copy the menu.lst (edit it) and grldr file to the dir that contains NTLDR file (c:\windows\something\i386) on another computer to my CF. This should be right, ok? And then i get the Try: hd0,0 NTFS 5:
and nothing more.
If I put these files to c:\ then I end up with screen GRUB>, can see 4 options (menu.lst etc., command, reboot, halt), see commands by tab and that.
I understand that there is something wrong with my menu.lst fail probably but as I have never done anything in linux then... it´s [censored] hard for me.
Looking forward for some help,
Andre.

Welcome to the forum.
Is this a X41? Is the CF and adapter in the HDD slot when you are cloning? Is the CF formatted as NTFS first? Most people here are using Acronis or Apricorn Easy Gig2 to do the cloning.

Thanks p78!
So I end up at http://www.memoryc.com/storage/solidsta ... tor=1.8%22 ... would all of these fit and work? Is the cheap 64GB KingSpec 1.8" MicroSATA SSD Solid State Disk (MLC) fine? If so, I think I'm ready to go!

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
hello,
yes, it´s a X41, file system is NTFS and Cf is Silicone 200x.
I use another computer with USB-reader to make the image and to write it to the new CF.
The CF that works OK is some noname 16GB and I´m trying to clone it to Silicone 16GB. When I look at it afther making the image there is about 130MB unpartitioned space(i figure it´s about the size that Silicone CF is bigger?) but the first partition is active and healthy via diskmanager.
Sadly I cant view it with partition magic as I ´m getting error from it, when USB-reader is connected to the computer.

no, you need the PATA/IDE one, which is unavailable in 64GB capacity (but you could go for 32 or 128GB)re404 wrote: So I end up at http://www.memoryc.com/storage/solidsta ... tor=1.8%22 ... would all of these fit and work? Is the cheap 64GB KingSpec 1.8" MicroSATA SSD Solid State Disk (MLC) fine?

I guess you mean that it is currently unavailable (out of stock) at that shop? http://www.memoryc.com/products/descrip ... index.htmlp78 wrote:no, you need the PATA/IDE one, which is unavailable in 64GB capacity (but you could go for 32 or 128GB)
I found an even cheaper supplier (converted to euros) again on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/KingSpec-1-8-IDE-SS ... 336wt_1065
Can I trust that this is a real Kingspec and not an asian copy? I guess so ... 15 $ to europe is not bad ...

I took a chance from ebay and got a real Kingspec that works just perfectly in my X41. I just looked in "My Ebay" and that seller is no longer registered with ebay. It took just over a month to get to me from Hong Kong, but for free shipping to Canada I couldn't say no.Can I trust that this is a real Kingspec and not an asian copy? Sorry I can't be any more help, but if you pay with paypal you do have some protection.

Was the IDE-CF adapter with the new CF card in the HDD slot when you did the cloning? Booted from the old card externally like on a USB port?

um, no.
First i made image to PC over the USB reader and then wrote image to the other CF again over the USB reader.
Can someone give me advise or a example, how to edit grub so I can make boot link there?
When I use grub4dos and grubinst then everything works ok until i reash the line grub> and then i have no ides further.

Kingspec is from China and (IMO) not a very reputable SSD maker outside certain X40/41-communities like this one. I doubt there's much incentive in mimicking her.re404 wrote: Can I trust that this is a real Kingspec and not an asian copy? I guess so ... 15 $ to europe is not bad ...

So what do you guys think of the 60GB Lenovo SSD? I have seen one going on ebay for a reasonable amount, and I don't have to muck about with the CF adapters.
Is it slower than the drives mentioned earlier in this m-m-m-mega thread?
I have Windows 7 and 1.5GB of RAM in my tablet (W7 rocks for tablets!) I would imagine this would speed things up nicely for me, not that it is very slow now but it could be a bit quicker.

It is really not that different between the drives mentioned here. But all of them will degrade in speed as you use them. Then you can bring back speed by cleaning the free space. It is a maintenance process much like defrag.T41Tablet wrote:...Is it slower than the drives mentioned earlier in this m-m-m-mega thread?

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
At risk of repeating what someone else said, I've seen on eBay:
> adapter trays to adapt 1.8" ZIF HD to x41 (apparently there are variants needed because the thickness of the cable-clamp or whatever device on the drive varies)
> ZIF drive with cable ZIF<>IDE, didn't seem to have the metal tray
> CF in x41 tray
Potential capacities of available ZIF drives will seem great to x41 owners.
I am wary as people say there are funnies with the x41 architecture's use of HDs, haven't had time to study.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
I just recently bought an X40 and after reading this thread I decided to order a Kingspec SSD. Of those people who have been using a Kingspec for some months, has there been any noticeable degradations in performance? What utilities are available to clean deleted data to return the drive to peak performance?

I don't know how it compares to other drives.
It is way faster than the original 40GB Hitachi hard drive.
I'm happy with it. Weogo

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Hmmm, I am considering getting an SSD. I want my X41 tablet to be faster and the disk is definitely holding me back.
I realize that some may think that spending €170 on a 60GB SSD for it may seem excessive considering the price of laptops, but I have become totally reliant on the tablet features for college work (my notes are much more comprehensive after I learned to use OneNote effectively). Also the X41 is simply a great design, the screen is excellent and the keyboard is groovy.
My logic is the drive will last longer, I am running Windows 7 so it has the support for the TRIM stuff (as far as I can figure out) and getting another tablet ie upgrading to a new one is a serious outlay cash wise.
I have one critical question though, if I was to purchase the lenovo SSD can I pop it in the machine and NOT have to go into the BIOS to change settings? The X41 I bought on ebay and repaired, unfortunately, has the BIOS locked by password so I can't get into it easily. I am aware that there are ways I can get around it but I can't risk such shenanigans on it as it is a production laptop.
Will it boot up to the SSD if I simply swap out the hard drive, obviously I will have imaged it and copy this onto the SSD.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
For me it worked without changin anything in the BIOS. The only setting that you MIGHT wanna change is that it will continue booting withou pressing ESC (since you WILL PROBABLY get an error on boot-up saying that you are using an 'unsupported drive'). But I think I also read somewhere that an OLDER bios version won't even complain about this error so maybe you are lucky even.T41Tablet wrote: can I pop it in the machine and NOT have to go into the BIOS to change settings? First time installing Windows 7 failed (don't know why), so I installed Ubuntu first. After that installing 7 was no problem and everything runs super-fast, alhough I have some issues in Windows 7 (see: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=81972 )
Good luck! Personally I think I made the right desicion getting the affordable Kingspec.

Those Lenovo-branded 60GB SSDs are officially sanctioned and won't bring the 2010 error with them, so there's no need to change the BIOS setting you just mentioned.

It has probably been discussed here before, but is there any way of overcoming the 2010 error with the Kingspec?

I read that you can downgrade the BIOS to an earlier revision, in order to get rid of the error. I guess Google may have the details. : )

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
I tried downgrading bios, but it didn't work.
Also I have embedded controller version 1.02.
Don't know if I can downgrade some other way. I feel that it hangs longer before getting to the error 2010, than it took to start booting Windows on the normal disk.
Would be nice if the disk-checking could be disabled.

You may try using "flash2 /u" to force update the BIOS if you're using the diskette or bootable CD version.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
I am wondering the same question (about speed). On paper, the Kingspec is much faster than the Lenovo, but would it be so noticeable in real-world performance comparisons? I am looking to re-vamp my x41-T as well. How does W7 run on it as-is (with the stock HDD)?T41Tablet wrote:So what do you guys think of the 60GB Lenovo SSD? I am unsure weather to spend so much on this dated notebook. I absolutely love the build quality, but I cant live with the slow hdd and generally laggy performance any longer.
I feel like a 1.5ghz Pentium M is fast enough for day-to-day applications but with the stock HDD opening say firefox takes UNBELIEVABLY long. Also my battery life is pretty poor (even with a fairly new battery - 6% wear). I can only average 4hrs on a full charge. This is with the processor locked to the lowest multiplier and the screen set to 4/5 bars.
An X200 would be a great upgrade, but the cost (about 600 more than refreshing my X41) is very offputting as I only use my laptop when I travel and when I'm in class. I would like to be able to run Photoshop Lightroom when im traveling but this probably surpasses the capabilities of the X41.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Ok, disregard the above post. I decided what I',m going to do
I'm keeping the X41 because it is such a great laptop, and because im too broke to buy a new laptop
The only thing I'm still looking for input on is which SSD to get.
I can either, spend $100 less and get a 32gb SSD, or spend around $80 more for double the space, 64/60gb.
The IBM drive is very enticing because it will be the most OEM solution possible (I feel like I will hate the bios error screen, even though it is kind of short). The Kingspec drive looks to be much faster though, and that is a huge consideration for me (after all, im doing all this because I want to make my laptop feel like a "new" one). I am very concerned about reliability though. I need my laptop for class so downtime is a huge pain. Do you guys think the Lenovo one will be more reliable than the Kingspec?
I'm keeping the X41 because it is such a great laptop, and because im too broke to buy a new laptop
The only thing I'm still looking for input on is which SSD to get.
