760ED & Wireless card

My 760 ED will not recognize the wireless card. I have tried two different mfg. with no results. I running 98SE and I think I have all the down loads from IBM but I cant be sure. Everytime I put the card in the computer thinks it's another infrared device and tries to install another IR port.

Any help or suggestions, please.

More important than any downloads from IBM, have you installed the card's software and drivers provided by the manufacturer?

What cards have you tried? My 770Z is happy with both an Orinoco Gold and a 3COM X-Jack 802.11b card.

I have a LinkSys wireless, a D-Link and a Netgear Etherned cards and the computer will not see any of them. The LinkSys software tell me there is no card installed. As I said, the computer thinks ANY card is a IR device. The network part of the system settting shows a IR device.

I suspect a BIOS bug but I cant work around it. It is not software. I take the HD to another laptop and it works. I take a good HD from another 760 and use it and the network cards worg fine.

See my problem?

Uninstall the IR drivers, reboot and see if Windows correctly identifies the card and installs the correct driver.

Done all that. when I put a card in 98 tried to install another ir device.

I updated the bios and now I cant initalize the setup. Everything loads but I cant change the boot procedure. The setup test went well withj no errors. One step forward one step backward. The bios update went smooth and I did have an old date and now I have the newere date.

I have a 760EL that I keep as a backup computer. Some months back I looked into the possibility of giving this machine a wireless capability. After spinning my wheels and googling like mad for a few days, I learned these Thinkpads have 16bit compatible PCMCIA slots. Today's WiFi cards are 32bit, and that's the crux of the problem. If you can find a 16bit Card, you might be in business. I gave up looking, but if you come across a card that works in your 760, let me know.

The PCMCIA slots in both the 760ED and 760EL series are Cardbus (32BIT) enabled, not 16BIT slots.

Have you enabled Cardbus support in the Configuration Utility?

...Then I defer to your expertise -- the 760s are 32bit! But, even enablng the Cardbus in the TP Config still wouldn't get the WiFi to work in my 760EL and it seems others are having the same problem. I basically gave up playing with this thing, but I wish those still at it, a good solution for their efforts. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Not all 760s are Cardbus enabled, in fact the 760EL was among the first.

As to finding a 16BIT WiFi card, their numbers are legion and can be found on eBay starting at $10 or sometimes even less. The original Orinoco Gold 802.11b card was 16BIT and it's among the best WiFi cards ever made. The external antenna connector on the card is a delight when WarDriving.

As far as a card for the 760ED or EL, Dealtree on eBay has tons of NIB Proxim Orinoco Gold 802.11a/b combo cards starting at $.99. I've got the a/b/g version of that same card in my 760XL and it works just fine.

i bought a Siemens SpeedStream SS1021 802.11b Wireless PCMCIA Card from someone at work cheap ($12). works just dandy in my 760xd. i seem to recall however that i needed to disable the ir device, because it was using an irq that the wireless card wanted. i don't think all wireless cards will work on just any irq - sometimes you've gotta juggle things around a bit.

I have a refurb 09N9904 for sale for $55.00. I also have an Alvarion Breezenet PC-DS.11b for sale for $35.00 if it will work for you.
Both are Orinoco gold "classic" clones and include shipping to the continental USA.

almost forgot....

fwiw - i gave up trying to get an msi cb11b pcmcia 802.11b to work. i'd advise staying away from that one.
