600X running Xubuntu

hello all

giving xubuntu a try on my new to me 600x. mind you i'm a total noob (aside from some basic messing around with ubuntu and SUSE) so this may be really easy to fix.

anyhow, i'm running feisty on it and it's doing something strange: when i try to access the terminal programs (so far as i can tell, there's two, one in the applications menu and another called root terminal), the machine logs me off without bringing anything up. any ideas?
