British video cams can read your lips http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39212

Actually current machine name would be rather KDMNUN 93000 :)

HAL 9000 was actually a homage to (H)I (A)B (L)M .

I'll be very surprised if this idea ever works. People talk about alot of useless stuff like those wherever they go (atleast i do openly). Also, I will have to question the authenticity of this website too.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

As Feynman famously said, the ultimate test of any theory is whether someone can use it to build something that makes money. By that yardstick lip reading software must work because the guy got a grant.

That said, just like the software that can match faces in a crowd to a database or the software that can detect aggressive behavior this falls into the broad category of Homeland Security snake oil.

Which is not to say that it won't work someday if enough money is poured down the hole - people can read lips and recognize faces so it is possible. But machines have a way to go yet before they are as reliable as people at these kinds of tasks in real world situations.

Although I've heard that the casino industry has facial recognition software that does a pretty good job of IDing banned players. But IDing someone seated quietly at a BlackJack table for half an hour is very different from IDing someone in a fast moving crowd.
