Battery Charging Problem

New (2 mos) T42p with the large 9 cel battery with no problems to date. I normally use the unit with the charger plugged in (with the battery meter staying at 100%) but ran the battery down to 6% once & recharged and have used the unit on battery a couple of other times letting the battery get down to 45%, 70% and a couple of times in the 85% range. Each time after I use the unit on battery I plug the charger cord back in, and it brings the battery back up to 100%.

Now all of a sudden this weekend I used the unit on battery only and the meter went down to 82%. Plugged the charger in and nothing - no charge, but no further battery drain either (ie. the battery meter stayed at 82%), and otherwise the unit works fine. Went back on battery only on Sunday for a short time and the battery went down to 75% where it is now, reinserted the charging cord and no charging - no further battery drain either, the battery meter just stays at 75%.

I suspect the charger is putting out enough voltage to run the unit but not enough to charge the battery. Anyone else have a thought?

As an afterthought I have a friend who also has a TP. Maybe I will borrow his charger to see if it will charge my TP.

Remove the battery for 30 seconds and reinsert it. See if that fixes it.

Similar issues with the T40 have been reported that seem to be linked to the latest BIOS / Embedded Controller Program code. Since the T41's and 42's use the same code it could well be an issue with them as well.

I hope IBM comes out with a BIOS update soon that fixes this. I had it happen to me again today with my ultrabay battery not wanting to charge up. I use my T40 every weekday and this has been happening to me about once a week since I updated to the latest BIOS/embedded controller software.

Mostly just an annoyance, but still ... I don't like annoyances ...
