x60s, x60t, or t60p, sell my dell precision m90?

#1 Post by codek » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:21 am

I am a semi gamer. I hate desktops. I live in one place during the week and another during the weekend.

I'm trying to buy a thinkpad now. I currently have a Dell Precision M90 with basically a 7900gtx but it is way to big to carry around. This is my desktop. I might be willing to part with this but the wuxga semi-matte/glossy screen (1920x 1200) is awesome.

I am looking at an x60s, x60t, or a t60p.

What should I get and why?

x60s - I like them because they are smaller and lighter but I'm really going to miss tablet functionality

x60t - thicker and most expensive out of the 3 but has the cool factor and you can use the tablet pen - I'm looking at the sxga

-Is it that much thicker than the x60?

t60p - a year ago this thing cost $1000 more. a plus with a ati 5250 card. (can this card give about 70% of the 7900gs performance?) 2 inches wider on both sides but same thinness, maybe thinner than the tablet. but best bang for buck in terms of performance. But ultimately bigger than what I want an ultraportable.

I know the santa rosa is coming but it will take awhile for the price to drop on those in my range(maybe a year). My range is about 1500 give or take a couple hundred.

Which will give me better battery life x60t or x60s?

In the end, I will keep two laptops

Keep your Dell and get the X60T. Although thicker and heavier than the X60s - it's still small enough to be considered ultraportable, and the screen is better. Tablet functionality is a nice bonus, even if you don't need it on a regular basis.

And, it's sxga on a 12" :) If i had to choose between the x60t and t60 now, I'd go with the x60t.

codek, if you think the Dell's 1920x1200 is awesome, the X60s would be HUGELY disappointing and even the X60t would be somewhat crippling. That's how I felt about my X60s and SXGA+ T43 after getting the WUXGA Inspiron 6000, so I sold both of them.

You should wait for the 1920x1200 T61.

I suppose the 1920x1200 will be on a 15.4" screen, but
Will the 1920x1200 still induce too much eye strain on users?

I am using a 21" 1680x1050 LCD screen which is very comfortable, and all 1920x1200 desktop LCD screens are having 24"+ sizes, as ergonomics go

I just hope that 1920x1200 can be on implemented a 17" (or even 20") Thinkpad mobile desktop indeed. By the way, the 17" MacBook Pro is 6.8 lbs, hardware and support has some notorious reputation among some of the users though, and that's not going to be Santa Rosa

1920x200 on a 15.4" screen is about 150 DPI, compared to a conventional UXGA 20" at 100 DPI or a widescreen WUXGA 24"at 95 dpi.

That means text and other graphic elements will be about 1/3 smaller -- unless you use Vista's capabilities for scaling the display elements (or similar capability on another OS) appropriately. Doing this can result in a comfortable display with impressive sharpness, bur with XP everything will indeed be very, very small.

I think the 1920x1200 will be a 15.4 and I DO NOT want a 15.4. That what i love about the t60, the 14.1 is great. Also, because the video card won't be able to run games at higher resolutions, I want an sxga. I don't expect this to be a dell xps. I'm fine with the fact that it is essentially a go between.

It looks like, I'm going keep my m90, buy a x60t or x61t, t60p or t61p in the future. thinkpads are one of the best ever.

now to decide

x60t now t61p later

or

t60p now and x61t later

As you will be keeping your m90 (as a desktop replacement), x60t is the reasonable option to go for
Wait for the T61p 1920x1200 later this year, and sell your m90 by that time
